CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Charlotte freshman Courtney Crandell scored her first career hat trick as the unbeaten and 15th-ranked Charlotte 49ers defeated 14th-ranked Marquette, 4-1, in a key Conference USA showdown. Charlotte remains without a loss at 10-0-1 over all and 4-0-1 in conference play. Marquette is 9-3-1 and is 3-1-1 in C-USA action.
"We're disappointed in the result and the way we played," said Marquette head coach Markus Roeders. "The way we played tonight, the better team won. We can only blame ourselves for not putting forth a better effort.. You have to bring your best game for 90 minutes against a great team like Charlotte. We have to find a quick solution. Saint Louis (MU's next opponent) is playing very well right now."
Crandall scored her 12th, 13th and 14th goals of the season. The first strike came at 4:10 into the game off an assist rom Kim Miles. She put the 49ers ahead with 2-0 in the second half.
"She's a handful. She's a finisher," Roeders said of Crandall. "You have to watch her. She has a knack for finding the back of the net."
Marquette was able to respond with a goal on a penalty kick from senior defender Anne Dalecky (Wauwatosa, Wis.). She scored on the PK after senior forward Kate Gordon (Sioux City, Iowa) was pulled down in the penalty area.
Crandall assisted on Charlotte's third score feeding Jennie Leeder. Crandell wrapped up the scoring with a shot from 16 yards out at 84:21.
Marquette plays at Saint Louis on Sunday, Oct. 13 at 1 p.m.
