BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Marquette held off a late charge from UAB to defeat the Blazers (4-6-1) in women's soccer, 3-2. The Golden Eagles, ranked 15th in the National Soccer Coaches Association top 25, improve to 9-2 overall and 3-0 in C-USA play.
After a scoreless first half, senior midfielder Anna Frisk (Rochester, N.Y.) got the goal scoring started for Marquette. UAB goalkeeper Lisa Nowoslawki attempted to clear a ball, but Frisk stepped in front, took possession and redirected the ball into the net. MU was up 1-0 in the 56th minute.
"UAB is a tough place for us to play," head coach Markus Roeders said. "We knew we had to break UAB down and be patient and that we needed to continue to do things the right way."
That started a flurry of five goals within seven minutes. Marquette went up 2-0 in the 59th minute on senior forward Kate Gordon's fifth goal of the year. Gordon (Sioux City, Iowa) received a pass from junior midfielder Kristin Jensen (Shorweood, Ill.). The play was started off a short corner kick that junior midfielder Laura Culane (Brookfield, Wis.) played to Jensen.
UAB scored the next goal 50 seconds later. Liz Bosscher put the Blazers on the board as they cut the MU lead to 2-1. Just 55 seconds later, Culane extended the MU lead back to two goals as she blasted a ball from 30 yards out. Culhane's goal was unassisted.
UAB cut the Marquette lead back to one in the 64th minute. Jenny Rynders scored off a corner kick from Jessica Samilski.
Marquette withstood the UAB challenge, which created nine shots in the second half. Senior goalkeeper Ashleigh Koenig (Naperville, Ill.) made four of her seven saves in the second half. In all, Marquette had 15 shots, scoring on three of those attempts.
"I'm pleased with the effort tonight, capping off a tough stretch of games," Roeders said. "We had fewer chances tonight than we did over the weekend (against Tulane and Southern Miss), but we made more of those chances."
Marquette returns to action on Friday, Oct. 4 at 7 p.m. EDT against South Florida in Tampa, Fla.
