MILWAUKEE -- The Marquette men's and women's tennis teams began the final leg of the fall season with the ITA/Omni Hotels Midwest Regional Championships. The men are competing in Madison, Wis., while the women play in East Lansing, Mich.
Two MU men were selected to play in the qualifying draw. Freshman Ian Kawas (5-4) lost his first round qualifying match to Klint Knable of Ball State, 6-3, 6-3. Senior Kent Davies (0-0) was also to compete, but did not get his scheduled 7 p.m. match with Ahmed Wahla of Northwestern started.
Freshman Eigintas Vedrickas (3-6) was selected to play in the main draw, which begins Saturday. He plays Michael Calkins of Illinois at 9:30 a.m.
Two MU men's doubles teams were selected to play. Vendrickas and Kawas (0-4) will play Mike Findling and Tom Dennis of Western Michigan in the first round. Davies and Creighton Macy make their debut as a duo against Jarett Cascino and Ben Davis of Wis.-Green Bay.
On the women's side, one player was selected to compete at the event hosted by Michigan State. Junior Veronica Garcia Briseno took part in the qualifying portion of the event. The top eight finishers of 64 advanced to the main draw.
Garcia Briseno won her first round match over Annall DeBruyn of Drake, 6-4, 6-0. She fell, however, in the second round, losing to Jennifer Smith of Notre Dame, 6-3, 6-2. Briseno's record stands at 9-4 for the fall.
