NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Vanderbilt scored twice in the final 15 minutes of the match to defeat Marquette, 3-2, in a non-conference women's soccer contest. Marquette falls to 10-6-3 on the season while Vanderbilt improves to 5-2-9.
Vanderbilt started the scoring in the 22nd minute. Jen Talvern scored the first of her two goals on the night taking a pass from Kat Carroll and beating MU keeper Ashleigh Koenig in a one-on-one situation.
Freshman Heather Goranson brought MU back to even, scoring in the 38th minute, scoring off a rebounded shot.
The Golden Eagles took the lead when senior Kate Gordon scored off a deflected shot in the 67th minute. She was fed by freshman Julie Thompson who recorded the assist.
"When we scored to go up 2-1, we had more of the pace of the game," head coach Markus Roeders said. "We had a lot of the younger players in and they were performing well."
Vanderbilt tied the contest in the 76th minute. Talvern scored her second of the evening, following a shot from Kelly Mulerud. The Commodores took the lead for good in the 77th minute on a penalty kick scored by Molly Wilson.
"It's disappointing. We're in a little bit of a rut that we're going to have to play ourselves out of," Roeders said. "We have to get back to what we did in the beginning of the year when we were winning with one or two goals."
Marquette finishes its regular season at home on Saturday, Nov. 2 against DePaul at Valley Fields at 6 p.m.
