Marquette Volleyball Falls To Louisville

Milwaukee -- The Marquette volleyball team came out on the short end of a three-game decision to Louisville Friday evening as the Cardinals raised their record to 11-3 overall (2-0 C-USA) with a 30-20, 30-25, 30-25 decision over the Golden Eagles. With the loss, Marquette's record falls to 9-5, 1-1 in league action.
The Cardinals, who entered the match as the C-USA leader in hitting percentage, lived up to that billing as it finished the contest with a solid 35.2 attack percentage (52-14--108). Marquette ended the match hitting 23.1 percent (41-17--104).
Marquette was led by freshman Theresa Coughlin (Chicago) who totaled 15 kills, the lone Golden Eagle to reach double digits in that category. Freshman Aga Niemcezewska (Vernon Hills, Ill.) made the most of her attack opportunities, hitting 36.8 percent for the contest (7-0--19). Sophomore Erin Freer (Stevensville, Mich.) led the squad's defensive effort with 13 digs.
Louisville spread its offense out and had three players record double-figure attacks led by Lena Ustymenko's 16 kills. Anastasia Zaitseva registered 12 attacks while Stacey Mercer rounded out the trio with 10.
The Cardinals finished with a 36-29 edge in digs along with a 9-5 margin in total blocks.
Marquette returns to action on Saturday evening (Oct. 5) when it hosts Cincinnati at the MU Gym starting at 7:00 p.m.
