Eagerly awaiting a second-straight at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament, Marquette not only got its wish, but was granted the opportunity to host the first and second rounds, as it did last year. One of three Conference USA teams to make the tournament, MU is hosting the first and second rounds for the second year in a row and hosts a first round match for the third straight year. It is the fourth consecutive year that MU has made the NCAA Tournament.
The Golden Eagles host Wisconsin at 7:30 p.m. at Valley Fields in the second match of the first round double header. Pepperdine, the tournament's third seed, plays Wis.-Milwaukee in the first match of the day at 5 p.m. Tickets are available at the gate on the day of game only and are $7 for adults and $5 for children and students for each session.
Marquette in the NCAA Tournament
For the fourth time in as many seasons, Marquette has advanced to the NCAA Tournament. The Golden Eagles are becoming regulars not only to the first round, but have a penchant for winning when it comes to big matches. In two out of the three previous years that MU has been selected for the NCAAs, the Golden Eagles have advanced past the first round.
In 1999, the Golden Eagles qualified as C-USA's automatic bid and pulled off an upset of 21st ranked Missouri, 3-2 in quadruple overtime, in the first round. MU nearly pulled off a second such feat in the second round, surrendering a late goal to ninth-ranked Clemson in a 1-0 loss.
The Golden Eagles were again the automatic bid from C-USA in the 2000 season. Marquette was offered the opportunity to host a first-round contest and defeated Wright State, 2-1, in double overtime. MU lost to Texas A&M, ranked ninth in the country, in the second round, 4-0 in College Station.
Last season, MU received its first at large berth, and the first at large berth for Conference USA. The Golden Eagles hosted first and second round games, but Michigan ended MU's run in the first round with a 1-0 result at Valley Fields.
Three players have scored goals in NCAA tournament history. Current players Kate Gordon and Anne Dalecky have strikes. Ashleigh Koenig has made six NCAA tourney saves.
In The Polls
Marquette has fallen out of both the NSCAA and Soccer America poll since being ranked as high as 14th in the Oct. 7 NSCAA poll. North Carolina and Charlotte, MU's two biggest opponents on the schedule, are second and 13th respectively in the NSCAA poll.
The Golden Eagles improved to fifth in the NSCAA Regional poll and moved to eighth in the Soccer Buzz regional poll. Purdue, Notre Dame and Cincinnati are the top ranked teams in both regional polls.
Gordon's Record Quest
With the regular season complete and an uncertain number of matches remaining in the season, senior forward Kate Gordon (Sioux City, Iowa) is close to eclipsing some MU career records. Gordon is second in career points and needs 12 to become the all-time leader. She is second in goals with 47, needing three to set the mark. She is already the all-time leader in matches played. She's tied for fourth in assists. She's tied for first in shots with 244. With 15 match winning goals, she needs three to tie for first in that category.
Counting on the Masses
In Marquette's 13 victories, 10 different players have scored the match winning goal. In all, 13 players in all have netted scores. Senior midfielder Anna Frisk (Rochester, N.Y.) and junior midfielder Laura Culhane (Brookfield, Wis.) each netted their first against UAB. Culhane's match winner made her the ninth different player to score match winners. Senior forward Kate Gordon (Sioux City, Iowa) became the first player to double up on the match-winning goal, earning her second of the year in the win over Louisville. She scored her third match winner of the year in the win over DePaul.
Gordon's Double
On four occasions this season has senior forward Kate Gordon (Sioux City, Iowa) scored multiple goals or one goal and one assist. She scored Marquette's first two goals of the season in a 4-3 win over Ohio. She also had an assist in that match. Two matches later, she scored the match winning goal and added an assist in a 2-0 win over Ohio State. Gordon had another multiple point outing, recording a goal and an assist in MU's 2-1 win over 15th-ranked Duke. She was partially responsible for the Golden Eagles first two goals in a 4-0 win over Louisville, scoring the first and assisting on the second. In the 3-0 win over DePaul, Gordon had two goals and assisted on the third. For her career, Gordon has 10 matches with a goal and an assist or multiple goals.
Freshmen Fit In
Against Tulane and Southern Miss, Marquette had three goals on the weekend, two scored by freshman. Midfielder Julie Thompson (Naperville, Ill.) and midfielder Heather Goranson (Germantown, Wis.) each scored, both scoring match winners, to continue the MU freshman class' strong contribution. Thompson and Goranson have been very active in the MU offense. Goranson is second in goals with four and Thompson is tied for the team lead in assists with six. MU freshmen have six goals on the season, with Goranson having four, Thompson and forward Kristie Matola (Brookfield, Wis.) each have one.
Doomsday Defense
While Marquette has been successful on the offensive end this season, the defense has been equally deserving in Marquette's success. With a veteran back line led by seniors Anne Dalecky (Wauwatosa, Wis.), Diana Detrie (Green Bay, Wis.) and Ashley Koenig (Naperville, Ill.), Marquette has kept its opponents from getting off quality shots. MU has outshot its opponents 351-224 and holds a 188-120 shot on goal advantage this season.
Roeders Wins 100th
Head coach Markus Roeders won two matches in the Dayton Marriot Flyer Classic to become the first women's soccer coach to win 100 games. He joined nine other MU coaches to reach 100 wins in any sport.
Five Named All C-USA
For the second straight year, Marquette's Kate Gordon (Sioux City, Iowa) and Anne Dalecky (Wauwatosa, Wis.) were named to the first team All-Conference USA women's soccer team, the league announced. Three other players earned All C-USA honors. MU's Anne Ioder (Franklin, Wis.) was named second-team all-league. Kristen Jensen (Shorewood, Ill.) was selected to third-team All C-USA and Julie Thompson (Naperville, Ill.) was selected to the conference's all-freshman team.
Two Named C-USA All-Tourney
Senior forward Kate Gordon (Sioux City, Iowa) and Anne Dalecky (Wauwatosa, Wis.) were each selected to the C-USA All-Tournament team. Gordon scored two goals in the tournament, netting strikes against Charlotte and Cincinnati. In addition to her defensive leadership, Dalecky scored the match winner on a penalty kick against Saint Louis.
Against Ranked Teams
Should Marquette advance to the second round to face Pepperdine, it would be the fourth time MU faced a team ranked in the NSCAA poll. The Golden Eagles are 2-1 with all ranked opponents coming from North Carolina. MU lost to North Carolina when the Tar Heels were no. 1, 4-1, on Sept. 20. On Sept. 22, MU defeated 15th ranked Duke 2-1. MU downed 12th ranked Charlotte, 2-1, in the C-USA semifinals on Nov. 7.
Scouting Wisconsin
Like Marquette, Wisconsin advanced to its conference tournament final, helping it receive an at-large bid. The Badgers finished the year at 12-8-3 and went 9-3-1 in their last 13. UW won five in a row before a loss to Ohio State in the Big Ten tournament final.
Jenny Kundert leads the Badgers in scoring with eight goals and 29 points. When not scoring she is feeding goal scorers. With 13 assists, she has taken part of 21 of UW's 36 goals. She had two assists in the three Big Ten tourney matches. Kelly Conway leads the Badger defense with a 0.94 goals against average and six shutouts. She made five saves in MU's 1-0 win on Sept. 17 this season.
Scouting Pepperdine
Pepperdine comes into the Marquette pod as the team with the highest credentials. The Waves are the no. 3 seed in the tournament and are ranked fifth in both the NSCAA and Soccer Buzz polls. Pepperdine shared the regular season West Coast Conference title. That league placed five in the NCAA Tournament and does not have a postseason tourney.
The Waves are 16-1-2 on the year, with the only loss coming to Loyola Marymount, 1-0 on Oct. 13. The Waves outscore their opponents by a 51-14 margin and have four players with seven or more goals. Ali Pavoni leads the squad with 11 goals. Jenna Fodor has eight goals and seven assists. In goal, Teresa Montano and Anna Picarelli each have 3.5 shutouts, but Montano has most of the minutes and has a 0.83 goals against average.
Scouting Wis.-Milwaukee
UWM had a slow start but came on late to win the regular season and post season Horizon League titles. UWM began the year at 1-4-1, but finished the year on an unbeaten string of seven matches at 5-0-2. The Panthers have lost just once in their last 15 matches, going 10-1-4 in that span.
UWM can get goals from anyone; 12 players have scored this year. The offense goes through Elizabeth Chudy and Maggie Suminski. Chudy leads the team with eight goals and 19 points. Suminski is the setup artist, having 10 assists to accompany her three goals. The Panthers rotate goalkeepers. Senior Mary Duffy plays the first 45 minutes. She has 33 saves and a 0.82 GAA. Molly Schneider finishes the contests and has a 0.89 GAA.
