Wisconsin Defeats Women's Soccer, 3-2, in NCAA First Round Match

MILWAUKEE - Despite two second half goals, Marquette couldn't overcome an early 2-0 lead by Wisconsin and fell to the Badgers, 3-2, in the first round of the NCAA Women's Soccer Tournament, held at Valley Fields on the Marquette campus.
Wisconsin (13-7-3) scored twice in a four minute span to take a 2-0 advantage on the Golden Eagles. Amy Vermeulen scored in the 23rd minute on a nine-yard header fed to her by Jenny Kundert. Jessica Wolff started the play with a throw in, also getting credit for the assist.
In the 27th minute. Molly Meuer scored from 25 yards out, taking a collecting a clearance by the MU defense and scoring on the long blast.
Marquette (13-8-3) responded early in the second half with a goal five minutes into the frame. Kate Gordon took a feed from Carolyn Klopp and chipped a shot over UW keeper Kelly Conway to cut the Badger lead to 2-1.
Wisconsin extended the margin to 3-1 in the 64th minute. Wolff and Vermeulen teamed up again, this time Vermeulen feeding Wolff for the goal, who headed in Vermeulen's free kick entry from seven yards out.
The Golden Eagles cut the lead again with a goal with 1:45 left. Julie Thompson scored an a scramble in front of the net from two yards out.
Marquette was unable to get another chance on net in the final minutes and Wisconsin advanced to the second round. The Badgers meet third-seed Pepperdine, winners over Wis.-Milwaukee 2-0 earlier in the day. Wisconsin and Pepperdine play at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 17 at Valley Fields.
