MILWAUKEE - The Marquette women's basketball team concludes exhibition play on Sunday, Nov. 17 against the Wisconsin AAU Vikings at 2 p.m. at the U.S. Cellular Arena.
The Golden Eagles are coming off a 71-58 win over the Dominican Republic National Team on Friday, Nov. 8. Five MU players saw their first action of the season, led by freshman point guard Carolyn Kieger (Roseville, Minn.) who scored three points and had seven assists in 30 minutes. Center Sarah Shouse (Bowling Green, Ky.) played 12 minutes and grabbed six rebounds.
The MU veterans showed their abilities as well. The Golden Eagles were led in scoring by junior guard Katie O'Grady (Chicago, Ill.) who scored 22 points on 6-of-9 shooting. MU's leading returning scorer from a year ago, senior center Rachel Klug (Cedar Grove, Wis.) scored 18 points and grabbed a team high 14 rebounds.
Marquette will be in for a big test against the Wisconsin AAU team. The Viking Velocity Red Club is coming off an 85-72 win over Wisconsin on Nov. 10. Anna DeForge, a former star at Nebraska, led the team with 21 points against the Badgers. Wisconsin AAU lost to Wis.-Green Bay, 73-61, on Nov. 9. Tamara Moore led Wisconsin AAU with 16 points while former Wisconsin center Jessie Stomski scored 15 against the Phoenix.
"What an incredible opportunity it will be to play a team of the caliber of the Wisconsin All-Stars," head coach Terri Mitchell said. "We know we have a great challenge ahead of us, and we are anxious to be back on the court as we get ready for another exciting year ahead."
Two former MU stars will be in the lineup for Wisconsin AAU. Lisa Oldenburg and Kiesha Oliver will be MU opponents for the second straight season in exhibition play. Oliver scored four points in eight minutes against Wisconsin. Oldenburg will be playing her first contest with Wisconsin AAU. Oldenburg is the fourth all-time leading scorer in MU history, while Oliver is 15th.
The two teams meet for the second-straight year. Last year, MU defeated Wisconsin AAU by a score of 76-71. Oldenburg scored 16 while O'Grady led the way for the Golden Eagles with 20.
"We are familiar with the players on the Wisconsin All-Stars," Mitchell said. "Obviously with everything that Lisa and Kiesha gave to this program, it's great having them back. It should be a good building block for our opener against Dayton and on to the home opener against UW-Milwaukee."
The Golden Eagles will begin the regular season on Sunday, Nov. 24 at Dayton in a 3:30 p.m. (EST) start. MU will play its first regular season home contest on Tuesday, Nov. 26 at 6 p.m. against Wis.-Milwaukee.
