Upcoming Game
Wis.-Milwaukee at Marquette
Tuesday, November 26; 6 p.m.
U.S. Cellular Arena, Milwaukee
Renewing its second longest rivalry, Marquette meets Wis.-Milwaukee on Tuesday, Nov. 26 at 6 p.m. MU and UWM have met 35 times with UWM holding a one-game advantage in the series. MU's has met only one other opponent more times - DePaul with 38 meetings. While the UWM rivalry doesn't have the distinction of having the most meetings, it is the longest of current opponents. MU first met UWM on February 3, 1976, in its fourth ever game.
The Golden Eagles and Panthers meet, both with the hopes of avoiding a season-opening two-game losing streak. Marquette is coming off an 80-62 loss at Dayton, while Wis.-Milwaukee fell at home to Purdue, 82-59. Marquette owns a six-game win streak against the Panthers and have won 11 out of the last 12. The Golden Eagles needed overtime to extend the streak last season, winning 67-65 behind 19 from Crystal Weaver.
Scouting Wis.-Milwaukee
Wis.-Milwaukee comes into its meeting with Marquette on the heels of its toughest opponent of the season. UWM hosted Purdue on Saturday at the Klotsche Center. The Boilermakers, ranked seventh in the country, defeated UWM by a score of 82-59.
In that contest, UWM junior center Maria Viall showed that she will be the Panthers' biggest offensive threat this year. She went 10-18 from the field, scoring 21 points and grabbing six rebounds in 33 minutes of action. Viall, a 16.7 points per game scorer from a year ago, scored 37 in UWM's only exhibition contest, a 99-87 win over the Lithuanian national team. In that game, Viall was 18-30 from the floor.
While UWM's strength lies in its inside game with Viall, its weakness may be its lack of depth. The Panthers played only nine players against Purdue, with eight of those seeing significant minutes. The Panther bench provided just 15 points against Purdue.
One UWM player, Kerri St. Aubin, will be making her fourth appearance against MU, however the previous three were on the soccer field. St. Aubin is also on the UWM women's soccer roster as a goalkeeper. She played one minute against Purdue.
On the Air: The Wis.-Milwaukee/Marquette game can be heard locally in the greater Milwaukee area on WRRD 540 AM. Kent Sommerfeld and Kareeda Chones will call the action. The game may also be heard over the internet on www.gomarquette.com. UWM will not originate a telecast.

In Home Openers
Marquette owns a 16-11 record in home opening games in its 27 previous seasons. In the Terri Mitchell era, Marquette has a 3-3 record. Last season, MU lost to seventh ranked Iowa State in its home opener, 68-50. MU defeated UWM two years ago, 59-43. Mitchell also has wins in the home opener against Iowa in the 1999-2000 season and Minnesota in the 1997-98 year.
Second Half Success
After a difficult first half against Dayton, Marquette put the clamps on defensively and ramped up its shooting ability to put together a fine half. The Golden Eagles held Dayton to 40 percent shooting and were an impressive 53.1 percent from the floor in the second 20 minutes. The Golden Eagles outscored Dayton 45-34 in the second period, closing out the final 11 minutes of the half outscoring the Flyers by 12 points. Dayton had extended a 29 point half time lead to 30 in the first nine minutes before MU closed the half in fine fashion.
O'Grady Shows Off
Against Dayton, Marquette was lead by junior guard Katie O'Grady (Chicago, Ill.). The junior started her ninth career game and was impressive. After scoring 22 and six in the two exhibition games, O'Grady continued on her impressive shooting season, going 7-10 from the floor and setting a career high with 17 points.
All Square
Heading into the 2000-01 season, Marquette women's basketball owned a 346-346 all time record. With a .500 winning percentage all-time, the team last season did nothing to change that fact with a 14-14 record. Heading into the season MU had an all time record of 360-360, exactly .500. Currently, MU has an all-time record in its 28th season of 360-361 (49.9 percent).
The Freshman Factor
Two Marquette freshmen made a significant impact in the team's season opening contest against Dayton. Freshman guard Carolyn Kieger (Roseville, Minn.) started in her first career collegiate game. Kieger was 3-for-5 shooting on the day with eight points and four assists. Freshman center Sarah Shouse (Bowling Green, Ky.) spent 12 minutes on the floor and grabbed six rebounds, one shy of the team high. She went 2-for-5 with five points. In all, MU freshman played 52 of 200 minutes against Dayton, scoring 18 points and grabbing 11 rebounds.
Offensive on the Glass
Marquette did everything it could to stay in the contest with Dayton in terms of offensive rebounding. The Golden Eagles grabbed 16 offensive boards, one more than it had on the defensive end. The 16 offensive boards translated to 18 second chance points.
Spreading it Around
Freshman Carolyn Kieger (Roseville, Minn.) had four assists in her collegiate debut. In exhibition play, Kieger had seven assists against the Dominican Republic national team and three against Wisconsin AAU.
Kieger Tabbed as "Freshman of Impact"
Carolyn Kieger was named as one of women's college basketball's "Freshmen of Impact" by Women's College Hoops.com (womenscollegehoops.com). She was listed as an honorable mention selection.
The publication states that Kieger "is a true point guard and could be the one to get Marquette back in the big dance." Players were selected as a "Freshman of Impact" based on the anticipated contribution that the student-athlete will make to her team as a first-year player. Kieger was selected as one of 39 newcomers out of nearly 1,000 NCAA Division I freshmen for this season.
