MILWAUKEE - The Marquette women's basketball team will play its first exhibition of the season on Friday, Nov. 8 at 7 p.m. at the U.S. Cellular Arena. Marquette will take on the national team from the Dominican Republic.
Having practiced since October 12, the Golden Eagles will get the first chance to match up against a different opponent. Head coach Terri Mitchell said she looks forward to comparing her team to another in live action.
"It will be good to play a team, other than playing ourselves in practice," Mitchell stated. "We need to be able to evaluate the team at this point. I think we are doing good things in practice, but we need something to measure ourselves against to see where we are offensively and defensively."
The Golden Eagles feature five freshman and seven returning players. Rachel Klug, the leading scorer from last season, returns for her senior year. A second-team All-Conference USA selection, Klug scored 13 points per game last season. She is also joined by sophomore Katie Alsdurf (7.3 points per game) and senior Rashida Gales (6.5 points per game) as the returning starters from a year ago.
Freshman Carolyn Kieger headlines the freshman class. She will be the starting point guard, replacing Kristi Johnson who graduated last year. Two other freshman - Dawneshia Smith and Tierra Shirley - are Milwaukee products and will make their MU debut in this contest.
The Golden Eagles will play their second and final exhibition contest on Sunday, Nov. 17 at the U.S. Cellular Arena against the Wisconsin Vikings AAU club at 2 p.m.
