CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Fifth-seeded Marquette (13-6-3) upset top-seeded and 12th-ranked Charlotte (16-1-2), 2-1, to advance to the Conference USA Women's Soccer Championship match at 2 p.m., on Saturday.
The 49ers jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when Courtney Crandell connected on a shot from short range in the ninth minute.
The Golden Eagles rallied in the second half, beginning with Kate Gordon's goal in the 76th minute. Gordon streaked down the field, looping the ball over the Charlotte goalkeeper for score. Ashley Spakowitz's goal in the 83rd minute sealed the victory.
"I thought last night's match was good (2-1 win over Saint Louis)," Marquette head coach Markus Roeders said, "but tonight was an incredible triumph over a great team. It was our best game of the year, not in terms of the result, but in the way we played."
Marquette advances to meet second-seeded Cincinnati, which defeated East Carolina, 2-1, earlier on Thursday. This is Marquette's seventh straight appearance in the C-USA Championship match. Saturday's match marks the third consecutive year that the Bearcats and the Golden Eagles have met in the championship game.
