Marquette travels to Atlanta to take part in the Hyatt Regency Atlanta Invitational. The Golden Eagles join Chicago State, Wofford and host school Georgia State in the four-team, two day event. The Golden Eagles play Chicago State in the first round with the tip set for Friday, Dec. 6 at 7 p.m. (EST). Wofford and Georgia State meet in the earlier first round game at 5 p.m. (EST). Game times are the same for the championship and consolation games on Saturday, Dec. 7.
The potential opponents in this tournament are less familiar to Marquette than are other foes on the schedule. Of the three other teams in the tournament, Marquette has only played Chicago State and the last meeting between the two came on Feb. 7, 1989.
Scouting Chicago State
Like Marquette, Chicago State will have a week-long layoff before heading to the Hyatt Regency Atlanta Invitational. The Cougars were supposed to have played on December 2 against Ill.-Chicago, but a water main break at the Dickens Center prevented that contest.
The Cougars come into its meeting with Marquette owning a 1-2 record. Chicago State defeated Stetson in DeLand, Fla., on Nov. 29 to pick up its first win of the season. Behind 14 points from Loretta Ellul and 15 from Michelle Jones, both off the bench, Chicago State was able to hand the Hatters their fourth loss of the year. South Florida shut down CSU offensively in a 56-44 decision. The Cougars shot just 21.2 percent in the loss. Against Arizona State, the Cougars proved to have a balanced scoring attack with four starters in double figures, but their defense betrayed them.
The Cougars are anything but an offensive machine. CSU averages just 56.7 points per game, but have held the opposition to an even 60. A 33.2 field goal shooting team, the Cougars have no player in double figures for scoring. The team leader is freshman guard Tina Hill with 8.3 points per game.
Chicago State has been effective on the glass, pulling in 40 rebounds per game. However, they have not been as adept in preventing rebounds, surrendering 43.0 per game.
On the Air: The Chicago State/Marquette game will not be broadcast on any media outlet.

Scouting Georgia State
Georgia State owns back-to-back years of NCAA Tournament experience, Georgia State has a proven winning tradition in the Atlantic Sun Conference. With three seniors on a veteran team with winning ways, it might be surprising that the Panthers have a 1-2 record early in the season. However, a quick glance at the schedule shows GSU has played a brutal first three games.
A win over Florida International was followed by losses to Florida State and Georgia.
Where the Panthers wins and losses have come is in defense. Against FIU, Georgia State held the Golden Panthers to 39.1 percent field goal shooting and were victorious. Florida State shot 45.3 percent and Georgia shot 52.6 percent.
Senior guard Angelina Miller seems to be the Panthers most reliable source of offense. Miller has scored 16 against Florida International and Georgia and she tossed in 17 against Florida State.Against Florida State, four of the five starters scored double figures, but the bench provided just eight points. GSU is vulnerable on the glass, having allowed 46 rebounds to Florida International and 52 to Georgia.
On the Air: Should Marquette and Georgia State meet, the game will carried on WRAS 88.5 FM in Atlanta. Brett Studdard and Carmelita Layog will provide commentary. The game should be available on the internet at www.wras.com or at www.georgiastatesports.com.

Scouting Wofford
Wofford struggled in its first two contests, but has rebounded in its most recent two games. The Terriors started the season with a 56 point loss to Indiana and a 17 point loss to Houston. Since the fourth place finish at the Indiana Tournament, Wofford has defeated Limestone by 39 and lost to Coastal Carolina by just two.
Wofford has three players who average in double figures. Sophomore guard Ricaye Harris leads the team with 12.8 points per game. She is also the team's leading assist maker with 3.8 per contest. Freshman forward Becky Sasso has been the ultimate sixth player so far this season. She averages 24.5 minutes per game off the bench and scores 10.5 points per game and grabs 6.5 rebounds per contest. Sophomore forward Stephanie Ripberger adds 10 points per game and leads the squad with 7.0 rebounds per game.
Wofford has seen an increase in its shooting percentage game by game. After a 25.5 percent performance against Indiana, the Terriors gradually improved to a 46.7 percent clip against Coastal Carolina.
Sasso has been the most consistent performer recently for Wofford. She scored 16 against Limestone and 12 against Coastal Carolina. Harris has been the most impressive, scoring a season high 25 against Limestone.

The First Half vs. The Second Half
Marquette's first half and second half numbers against Saint Francis (Pa.) were strikingly simular. MU scored 31 points in each half on 10-of-25 shooting. This marked the first time this season that MU did not have a better second half than first half. The trend, however, continued defensively as the Golden Eagles slowed the Red Flash in the second half. Saint Francis shot 44.8 percent in the first half and went 36.4 percent in the second half.
Against Dayton, MU was went 26.8 percent from the floor in the first half and improved to 53.1 in the second half. The Golden Eagles also slowed Dayton from 60 percent to 40 percent from half to half. Against Wis.-Milwaukee, Marquette upped a 42.9 first half shooting average to 45.5 in the second half.
Through three games, Marquette is 42-for-90 (46.7) in the second half and has 116 points for a 38.7 second half scoring average.
Klug Returns to Form
After only taking five shots in a five point effort against Dayton, senior center Rachel Klug has returned to the form she showed much of last year in the next two games. Against Wis.-Milwaukee, Klug scored the third highest total of her career, scoring 21 points on 9-of-12 shooting. She was also perfect from the line, hitting all three attempts.
Later that week, she hit a career high 26 against Saint Francis (Pa.). She was 8-of12 from the floor and was again perfect from the line. This time, however, she was 10-for-10 and is now hitting a C-USA best 94.1 percent from the free throw line. It was the sixth time in her career she scored 20 or more points and was the 24th time with 10 or more points.
O'Grady Shows Off
Against Dayton, Marquette was led by junior guard Katie O'Grady (Chicago, Ill.). The junior started her ninth career game and was impressive. O'Grady was 7-for-10 from the floor and set a career high with 17 points. Against UWM, she was effective, scoring 10 points, marking the first time in her career she has scored 10 or more in back to back games. For her career, O'Grady has five career 10 or more point outings, with three coming her freshman year.
Alsdurf Inches Up
With a 10 point outing against Saint Francis (Pa.), sophomore guard Katie Alsdurf (Forest Lake, Minn.) upped her season average to 8.3 points. A consistent scorer of 10 or more last year, Alsdurf is just 1.7 points away from joining Rachel Klug (17.3) and Katie O'Grady (10.7) with an average of 10 or more points.
Needing One to Be All Square
Heading into the 2000-01 season, Marquette women's basketball owned a 346-346 all time record. With a .500 winning percentage all-time, the team last season did nothing to change that fact with a 14-14 record. Heading into the season MU had an all time record of 360-360, exactly .500. Currently, MU has an all-time record in its 28th season of 361-362 (49.9 percent).
Offensive on the Glass
Marquette did everything it could to stay in the contest with Dayton in terms of offensive rebounding. The Golden Eagles grabbed 16 offensive boards, one more than it had on the defensive end. The 16 offensive boards translated to 18 second chance points. Against Wis.-Milwaukee, Marquette grabbed 15 offensive boards. MU again led that battle with 14 of its 36 offensive boards coming on the offensive end against Saint Francis (Pa.).
Spreading it Around
Freshman Carolyn Kieger (Roseville, Minn.) had four assists in her collegiate debut. She continued to find open players against Wis.-Milwaukee, dishing a season high six assists. She improved her assist-to-turnover ratio against UWM, turning over the ball just twice against the Panthers.
Taking What is Free
Through two games, Marquette is making the most of its free throw attempts. The Golden Eagles are 45-of-55 from the line this year, hitting 78.9 percent. Last year, Marquette was 70.8 percent from the line. Senior center Rachel Klug (Cedar Grove, Wis.) currently leads C-USA with a 94.1 free throw percentage on 16-of-17 shooting.
Strength of Schedule Always Difficult
Marquette owns the 43rd best overall and 52nd best non-conference schedule according to the Richie Summerville/WBCA preseason RPI release. The Golden Eagles have the fourth-toughest strength of schedule among C-USA teams according to the release. TCU has the nation's fourth most difficult schedule. Tulane is ranked 28th in the preseason strength of schedule and DePaul is 36th.
Marquette's 2002-03 schedule contains four teams currently ranked in the USA Today/ESPN/WBCA Top 25. Notre Dame is ranked 10th in that poll. Iowa State owns an ranking of 18. C-USA schools TCU and Cincinnati are ranked 19th and 21st respectively.
Balanced Attack
Against Wis.-Milwaukee, all 12 players played and no single MU player played more than 27 minutes. In addition, 11 of the 12 players scored and 10 hit field goals. All but one player grabbed a rebound as well. Eight players logged assists and seven different players grabbed a steal in the 73-53 victory.
Golden Eagles Ink Three in Fall Signing Period
Head women's basketball coach Terri Mitchell has announced the signing of three high school players to national letters of intent. The incoming freshman class includes Danielle Kamm from Saginaw, Mich.; Jasmine McCullough from St. Louis, Mo.; and Christina Quaye from Chicago, Ill. Kamm is a small forward for Nouvel Catholic Central High School in Saginaw, Mich. She averaged 20.7 points and 11.8 rebounds per game as a junior and was named to Street & Smith's High School All-America Team. McCullough is in her senior year at Rosary High School in St. Louis, Mo.. Last season, she scored 15.5 points and 9.5 rebounds per game as she was selected third-team all-state.

TCU, which captured the 2002 C-USA regular season title, and Cincinnati, which claimed the C-USA Tournament crown have both been chosen by the 14 C-USA head coaches to win the 2002-03 regular season title.
