Men's Golf Finishes 17th at Ron Smith Invitational Georgia Southern wins tournament
TAMPA, Fla. - Taking advantage of near perfect golf conditions at the University of South Florida Golf Course today, Georgia Southern shot a 288 to overtake Jacksonville State for the championship of the 36-hole Ron Smith Invitational. Marquette held on to 17th position after a shooting a 312, seven strokes better than the first round.
Just one day after the second round had to be canceled due to heavy rains and dropping temperatures, the golfers from the 18 teams teed off today to clear blue skies and temperatures climbing to the high 60s.
Georgia Southern entered the round four shots behind Jacksonville State, but used a 69 from David Elmore and a 71 from Aron Prize to vault to the top.
Meanwhile, Florida Southern's Steve Sokol shot a four-under 67 and claimed medalist honors with a 36-hole 138, three shots ahead of four golfers tied at 141, including Georgia Southern's Prize and Jason Kolumber, who had led after one round with a 67.
Marquette's highest finisher was freshman Nathan Colson, continuing his trend of leading MU. He tied for 42nd, shooting a 10-over, 152.
