Milwaukee -- Marquette sophomore DWYANE WADE (Oaklawn, Ill./Richards HS) has been named Conference USA Player of the Week for the period ending Feb. 3. In addition, Wade was named National Player of the Week by The Sporting News and FoxSports.com
The 6-foot-4 Wade averaged 24.5 points, 8.0 rebounds and 4.0 steals in helping the Golden Eagles to a pair of C-USA wins last week. At Tulane (Jan. 29), Wade sank nine-of-13 field goal attempts and all six of his free throw attempts en route to a game-high 24 points in aiding a 68-66 win. In addition, Wade grabbed eight rebounds, second high on the team, and came up with a game-high five steals. Against No. 4-ranked Cincinnati, Wade again went nine-of-13 from the field while finishing with a game-best 25 points. He led all players with eight boards and registered three steals as Marquette ended UC's 20-game win streak with a 74-60 victory.
Wade stands first on the team and No. 7 among C-USA players in scoring with an average of 18.5 points per game. Wade also holds down the No. 1 spots on the team in rebounding (7.0 rpg, t-16th in C-USA), assists (3.71 apg, 12th C-USA) and steals (2.67 spg, 1st in C-USA). Wade has 56 steals thus far and holds down the No. 9 spot on the school's all-time seasonal list.
It is the second time that Wade has earned C-USA Player of the Week honors and the third time this year a Golden Eagle has been recognized by the conference office. Wade was POW following his performance at the Great Alaska Shootout while Odartey Blankson was tabbed Co-Player of the Week on Jan. 14.
Marquette, ranked No. 23 in this week's USA Today/ESPN Poll, stands 19-3 overall and 8-1 in C-USA play, good for a first-place tie in the American Division with Cincinnati and Charlotte. The Golden Eagles, winners of their last eight games, host East Carolina on Wednesday (Feb. 6) at the Bradley Center starting at 7:00 p.m.
