The Marquette men's golf team returns to action with the third annual El Diablo Intercollegiate. The tournament is the first of two in a busy travel week for the Golden Eagles. After the El Diablo in Citrus Springs, Fla., MU travels to Hawaii to play in the Kauai Collegiate Cup.
Tournament Format and Field
Three 18-hole rounds will complete the 2002 El Diablo Intercollegiate. The first two rounds will be held in the morning on Saturday, March 16. The final round will be contested on Sunday, March 17.
Joining Marquette in this year's 20-team El Diablo Intercollegiate are: Ball State, Cincinnati, Elon, Eastern Kentucky, Iowa State, Indiana, Kent State, Louisville, Marshall, Methodist, Michigan, Northern Illinois, Notre Dame, Penn State, Rhode Island, West Florida, Wichita State, William and Mary and Xavier. Teams will field five golfers with the four best scores of each round going toward the team score.
El Diablo Golf and Country Club
The El Diablo Golf and Country Club is owned by Dr. Steve Pyles, a graduate of Marshall University, the tournament's host. Jim Fazio designed this course that plays to 7,045 yards with a par of 72.
El Diablo is a nationally-recognized course that was rated as the best new affordable public golf course by Golf Digest in 1999.
Golfers are best advised to be accurate on this course. The course is lined with trees and inaccurate shots will find a difficult follow up shot. Water accentuates the signature hole, no. 11, a 392-yard, par 4, which also features an elevated green protected by three large bunkers in front.
Last Time at the El Diablo Intercollegiate
Last season, Toledo claimed the team tournament championship in the second El Diablo Intercollegiate. The 36-hole event was won by the Rockets with a four stroke advantage over Rhode Island, who held the round one lead.
Rice golfer Scott Phillips won the individual crown with a four-under 140. Three other golfers, including two from the tournament champs, finished at two under. A pair of other golfers finished at one-under.
Marquette did not compete at this tournament.
Last Time Out
Marquette came in 17th of 18 teams at the Ron Smith/USF Invitational, in a rain-shortened 36-hole event. The Golden Eagle golfers did not have one of their best collective outings of the season, perhaps working off some of the rust from not playing in a tournament in nearly three months.
Nathan Colson once again led the MU charge for the fourth time this season, shooting a 152. He placed 42nd in the tournament. No other Marquette golfer was in the top 50.
The Lineup
Participating for MU are Nate Colson, Matt Hilton, Jason Gaare, Mike Everson and Justin Christensen.
Colson leads Marquette in scoring average with a 79.30 and has placed in the top 15 of all three of Marquette's fall tournaments. Highlighting the fall season was Colson's fifth place finish at the John Piper Intercollegiate when he carded a three-over, 219.
