Milwaukee -- The honors continue to pour in for Marquette University basketball standout Dwyane Wade (Oak Lawn, Ill.) as the 6-foot-4 guard has been named as Basketball Times' College Basketball Newcomer of the Year for the 2001-02 season. In addition, Wade was named a second-team All-American by that publication.
Wade ended the past year tops on the team and No. 8 among C-USA players in scoring with a 17.8 points per game average. In addition, he paced the team in rebounding (6.6 rpg), assists (3.44 apg), steals (2.47 spg, No. 1 in C-USA) and blocked shots (1.12 bpg) in helping Marquette to a 26-7 overall record. Wade scored in double figures in 30 of his 32 appearances and posted nine outings of 20 or more points. His high-scoring game of the year was a 35-point performance in an 87-68 win at DePaul (Jan. 19), the third-highest total ever turned in by a Marquette player in a C-USA game. His 571 total points established a Marquette seasonal record for sophomores.
Head Coach Tom Crean also was an award recipient from Basketball Times, earning 2001-02 Mideast Coach of the Year honors. Crean guided the Marquette program to its most wins since the 1975-76 season and the first NCAA Tournament appearance since 1997. Crean had already been named Conference USA Coach of the Year as well as District 11 Coach of the Year by the National Association of Basketball Coaches and District V Coach of the Year by the United States Basketball Writers Association.
