MADISON, Ill. -- Marquette freshman Nathan Colson fired a one-over first round and an even par second round to sit one stroke off the pace at the Billiken Invitational. Colson's one-over is tied with Evan Frederick of Saint Louis. Both are one shot behind Dan Brown of Lindenwood, who shot even par for both sets of 18 hole rounds.
Colson's par 71 was the best total of the second round along with Brown and Frederick. Kyle Awerkamp of Eastern Illinois was the only golfer to card an under par round with a 70 in the first 18 holes to lead after one round. However, Awerkamp faltered with a 78 in the second round to tie for 10th after 36 holes.
Frederick joins Scott Fann (+5) and Adam Trower (+6) as Saint Louis golfers in the top 10. The trio led the Billikens to a 24-over, 592. Saint Louis is in first place ahead of Missouri Baptist, leading by three strokes. Marquette, the winner of the Billiken Invitational two years ago, is in 11th place at 609 (+41).
MU's Matt Hilton also had a solid 36 holes. He's in 23rd place after a 151. Jason Gaare is in 56th place after two rounds with a 15-over, 157. Mike Everson is one stroke behind in 64th place. Justin Christiansen shot a 26-over, 168 to place 84th.
Play concludes tomorrow at Gateway National Golf Links. Tee times start at 8 a.m.
