MILWAUKEE - Marquette women's basketball head coach Terri Mitchell has announced the signing of 6-0 forward Efueko Osagie to a national letter of intent. Osagie recently concluded her senior season at Douglass High School in Oklahoma City, where she was a four year starter.
Osagie had a productive senior season in 2001-02, leading her squad to a state tournament appearance. She averaged 13.6 points per game as a senior. She was a 51 percent shooter from the field in her final campaign, leading DHS to a 13-8 record. She also grabbed 9.3 rebounds per game. An unselfish player, Osagie also set high marks for assists, dishing 3.3 per contest. She will fit in well with Mitchell's defensive minded squad as she helped Douglass hold its opponents to a 44.9 points per game average.
As a senior, Osagie was named City Conference Player of the Year and earned two regular season all-tournament honors. She was a first team All-Big City selection and was named to the Oklahoma All-State squad as a senior.
"Our recruitment of Efueko happened quickly. Once she had taken her visit, she knew this was the right fit for her," Mitchell said. "She's a young lady with tremendous character and is consistently turning heads at the Oklahoma all-state tryouts. She's a tremendous athlete with an incredible leaping ability, which makes her valuable inside and out. She's a real diamond in the rough."
A career 13.4 points per game and 8.7 rebounds per game performer, Osagie started her high school career tossing in 9.0 points and grabbing 5.8 boards per game. She upped those totals to 14.7 points and 8.6 rebounds per game as a sophomore. In her junior season, she set career bests with 16.9 points and 11.9 rebounds per game.
Osagie joins four players who signed letters of intent in the early signing period. Sarah Shouse, a 6-5 post from Bowling Green, Ky., Carolyn Kieger, a 5-6 guard from Roseville, Minn., Tierra Shirley, a 5-7 guard from Milwaukee, Wis., and Dawneshia Smith, a 6-0 center from Milwaukee, Wis, will join Osagie as freshmen next season.
