NAVARRE, Fla. - Nathan Colson (Plymouth, Wis.) and Matt Hilton (Muskego, Wis.) are within striking distance of the lead after the first round of the Conference USA Men's Golf Championship at The Club at Hidden Creek in Navarre, Fla.
Colson had a brilliant front nine, going three-under, but shot three-over on the back to remain at even par, six strokes off the lead. Colson is in a six way tie for 12th place. Hilton shot a consistent one-over 73 and is in 13th place.
TCU's Bret Guetz, who earned Conference USA's April Golfer of the Month honor for his record-setting performance in the Horned Frogs' last regular season tournament, has carried this momentum over to the first round. Guetz carded a six-under-par 66 during Monday's opening round to help TCU to a share of the team lead after the first 18 holes.
TCU and Southern Miss each posted scores of 291, as Jake Pasch led USM with a two-under-par 70. Marquette is in 13th place, 14 strokes behind the Horned Frogs and Golden Eagles, at a 17-over 305.
Freshman Justin Christensen (Sioux Falls, S.D.) had one of his best first rounds of the year, carding a 79 in the first 18 holes. Junior Mike Everson (Muskego, Wis.) fired an 81, while freshman Jason Gaare (Elmhurst, Ill.) sits in 66th place with a first-round 84.
The second round of the three-round tournament takes place on Tuesday, April 23 in Navarre, Fla.
