MILWAUKEE - Marquette women's basketball honored its best at the annual postseason all-sports awards banquet. Three MU women's basketball players were honored with year-end accolades.
Junior center Rachel Klug was named the team's Most Valuable Player and the team's Offensive Most Valuable Player. Klug started 26 of the team's 28 games and finished as the squad's leading scorer (13.0 ppg) and rebounder (6.3 rpg). She was an All-Conference USA Second-Team selection, hitting a team-high 56.2 percent from the floor and also led the team in blocked shots with 33. Her field goal percentage mark tied her for third place on the school's seasonal chart and her 60 percent mark from the floor in league games established a school record in that category. She scored in double figures in 20 games and recorded four contests of 20 or more points.
Senior guard Kristi Johnson was named the team's Defensive Most Valuable Player. Johnson, who started every game of her career, was one of the most instrumental players on both ends of the court. She was the ball-handler on the offensive end and was the spark plug on the defensive end. Johnson, a third team all-conference selection, was second on the team in steals with 29 and was a huge part of the success of the MU defense. Playing 32.0 minutes per game, Johnson keyed a defense that allowed its opponents to score just 59.6 points per game (fourth in C-USA) and hit 35.0 percent of its shots (first in C-USA.
The Golden Eagle character award was presented to sophomore Kelly Schwerman (Waukesha, Wis.). Schwerman played 19.3 minutes per game this season and was a proven success as Marquette's sixth player. She shined in every game with her aggressive defense and her creative offensive abilities. On the floor, Schwerman was third on the team in scoring with 6.6 and was tops in three-point field goal percentage (30.1) and free throw percentage (83.1)
Marquette concluded its 2001-02 season with a 14-14 record. During the year, head coach Terri Mitchell picked up her 100th career victory and became MU women's basketball's all-time winningest coach.
