Marquette Volleyball Opens 2002 Season

THE COACHES - Marquette is directed by first-year head coach Pati Rolf (North Dakota State, '92) who was appointed to her current position on May 10, 2002. Rolf joined the Golden Eagles following a successful 14-year career at Minnesota-Duluth where she compiled a 310-169 won-lost slate. During his stint at UMD, she led the program to 11 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference titles along with three trips to the NCAA Division II Regional Tournament. In addition, Minnesota-Duluth compiled 10 seasons of 20 or more wins and her conference record was a glittering 165-20.
Cleveland State Head Coach Chuck Voss (Ohio State '93) is in his third season at the helm of the Vikings' program and fifth as a head coach. Heading into this weekend's action, Voss has a career mark of 52-72, 19-36 at Cleveland State.
Wyoming Head Coach Jim Barnes (McNeese State, '94) is in his first campaign as the leader of the Cowgirls' program. Prior to his current post, Barnes spent six years (1996-2001) as the head coach at Lamar where he compiled a won-lost slate of 128-71 that included four 20-wins seasons.
Elaine Piha (Pittsburg State, '91) starts her fifth year in charge of CMU's program and she has career and school mark of 38-75.
SERIES NOTES - Marquette leads in the all-time series against Cleveland State by a 4-3 margin. The teams last meet in 1991 when MU claimed a four-game win at the Akron Invitational.
Saturday's match between Marquette and Wyoming will mark the first time the schools have met in volleyball.
Central Michigan stands 2-1 all-time against Marquette. The Chippewas and Golden Eagles squared off last season at the Marquette Challenge with MU coming away with a three-game sweep.
THE CAPTAINS -- Serving as captains for the 2002 Marquette team will be seniors Danielle Hagen (Milwaukee) and Amy Levin (Palatine, Ill.). Hagen enters 2002 as the most experienced performer on the Marquette roster with 297 games over 82 matches. She has registered 541 successful attacks and stands tied for 10th all-time at Marquette in block assists with 174.
Levin is a three-time mongram winner and has seen action in 113 games over 43 matches.
GREER WATCH -- Junior Gemma Greer (Winfield, Ill.) starts the 2002 season in fourth place on the school's all-time assists list with 1,943. Last season, Greer ranked second among C-USA players and among the top 15 nationally in assists with a 13.30 per-game average. Her 1,410 assists placed her third on the school's seasonal chart and her 74 assists vs. Louisville (Oct. 12, 2001) represented the second-highest total by a C-USA player during the 2001 campaign.
