MILWAUKEE - Marquette scored two goals in the first 33 minutes of the match and held Rhode Island to five shots in a 2-0 win at Valley Fields. The Golden Eagles win their third straight match and are 4-1. Rhode Island suffers its first loss of the season and is 2-1-1.
Junior midfielder Kristen Jensen (Shorewood, Ill.) scored in the 17th minute when she received a ball that was attempted to be cleared by the Rhode Island defense. Jensen settled with her right foot and blasted a ball into the net from 25 yards out to put MU up 1-0. The score was Jensen's first of the season.
Freshman Heather Goranson (Germantown, Wis.) scored her first of the year 16 minutes later. Junior midfielder Laura Culhane (Brookfield, Wis.) centered a ball from the right edge to the center of the penalty area. Goranson one timed it to the upper right corner of the net and past Rhode Island keeper Jamie Epperlein.
"The two goals we scored were great goals," head coach Markus Roeders said. "For a freshman like Goranson to take a ball and have the composure to not only strike it toward goal, but place it in the upper 90 is great."
The Marquette defense kept Rhode Island from advancing forward much of the match. MU held Melanie Kasparek, the Rams leading scorer with three goals, to just one shot for the match.
"We didn't give them many opportunities," Roeders said. "It's not like you're going to keep a great goal scoring team from having chances, but we eliminated a lot of their offensive pressure. I'm pleased with the way our defense played."
Marquette continues its season on Tuesday, Sept. 17 at Valley Fields with a 7 p.m. match against Wisconsin.
