The Marquette men's golf team will open up the 2002-03 season with the first of five tournaments. MU will be playing in the John Piper Intercollegiate, hosted by Bowling Green State University. Marquette will play two other times in September. MU has four tournaments in the next four weeks.
Tournament Format and Field
Three 18-hole rounds will complete the 2002 John Piper Intercollegiate. The two rounds will be held beginning at 8:30 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 16 and the third round will be held beginning at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 17.
Joining Marquette in this year's 12-team John Piper Intercollegiate are: Bowling Green, Eastern Michigan, Dayton, Detroit, Oakland, Ohio Wesleyan, St. Bonaventure, Wis.-Green Bay, Wright State and Youngstown State. Teams will field five golfers with the four best scores of each round going toward the team score.
Stone Ridge Golf Club
This 18-hole course was designed by Arthur Hill and features small, moderately undulating greens. The layout is links-style, with open fairways, which, like the greens, are also undulating. Water comes into play on six or seven holes in the form of ponds.
The course has two par fives and two par threes on each of the front and back nine. One of the most difficult stretches on the course is holes four-seven. The par five fourth is 530 yards, followed by a 200 yard par three fifth hole. After a short par four on the sixth, a 560-yard par five awaits on the seventh hole, the longest of the course.
Last Time at the John Piper Intercollegiate
Last season, Marquette finished 11th in the 11-team John Piper Intercollegiate. Held in late October, Marquette shot a 935, 53 shots behind tournament winner Bowling Green. The Falcons won the tournament on their home course, shooting 287-295-300-882.
Wright State's John Schones won the individual event with a 213, winning by one shot over Ryan Harmon of Youngstown State. Nathan Colson finished six shots back in a tie for fifth place.
Last Season
Marquette had two team finishes in the top 10, but finished the season out of the top spots. MU placed 25th, 16th and 14th in their final three tournaments.
The Golden Eagles were led by Nathan Colson last season. Colson won the Billiken Invitational in April. He led the team in scoring with a 74.11. Four of five letterwinners return for Marquette, but just two will be making the season debut for the Golden Eagles. Senior Matt Hilton, second on the team with a 74.77, joins Hilton on the opening-day lineup.
The Lineup
Participating for MU are Nathan Colson, Matt Hilton, Steve Sass, Kyle Murphy and Joe Weber.
Colson led Marquette in the last season with a 74.11 scoring average. Colson had three sub 70 rounds last year and shot a 213. Sass, Weber and Murphy are all freshman and will be competing for the first time collegiately.
