CHICAGO - Conference USA has announced that senior goalkeeper Ashleigh Koenig (Naperville, Ill.) was named Conference USA Co-Defensive Player-of-the-Week, for the week ending September 15. Koenig joins UAB defender Suzanna LaMotte as Co-Defensive Player of the Week. UAB's Jenny Rynders was the Offensive Player-of-the-Week.
Koenig made two saves and directed the Marquette defense to a 3-0 shutout of previously undefeated Rhode Island. The Rams had nine goals in three matches prior to MU's shutout. Koenig and the MU defense recorded their third straight shutout and have not allowed a goal in 308 minutes. With two saves, Koenig brings her season total to 12. She has 16 career shutouts.
"Over the past week and a half, she has contributed to our defensive success," head coach Markus Roeders said. "Our defense has been building confidence and she's a big part of it. We need to ride that wave of confidence this week with three big matches against regionally ranked opponents - two of which are nationally ranked. We need her to be the leader we know she is and have her continue to help improve our defense."
Marquette has the first of three matches this week on Tuesday, Sept. 17, at home against Wisconsin at 7 p.m. MU then takes part in the Duke adidas Classic on Sept. 20 and 22. Marquette opens the tournament against the nation's no. 1 team, North Carolina, on Sept. 20 at 5 p.m. EDT. Marquette plays tournament host Duke, ranked 20th in the recent Soccer Buzz poll, on Sunday, Sept. 22 at st 2:30 p.m. EDT.
