DURHAM, N.C. - Marquette got a goal and an assist from senior forward Kate Gordon (Sioux City, Iowa) as the Golden Eagles defeated Duke, ranked 11th by Soccer America and 15th by the NSCAA and Soccer Buzz, 2-1. Marquette improves to 6-2, Duke falls to 5-3.
Gordon scored in the ninth minute to put MU up 1-0. She received a long ball from senior defender Anne Dalecky (Wauwatosa, Wis.) and was able to beat Duke goalkeeper Katie Straka for the initial score. The score was the fourth of the season for Gordon.
Two minutes after halftime, junior midfielder Anne Ioder (Franklin, Wis.) put MU up for good, scoring the match winner. Senior forward Ashley Spakowitz (Hartland, Wis.) started the play and crossed for Gordon who left it for Ioder. She drove the ball on the first time on the ground to the far post for MU's second tally.
Duke responded in the 69th minute as Carolyn Riggs scored her fifth goal of the year.
"The last 25 minutes we had to weather the storm a bit," head coach Markus Roeders said. "But our defense held up. I'm proud of the way we came out and attacked early. We played at an extremely high level this week."
Roeders said he was pleased with the way his team played during the week as it played three matches in six days. MU defeated Wisconsin, a regionally ranked team, 1-0 to start the string. The Golden Eagles also played the nation's top ranked team, North Carolina, losing 4-1.
"We played an outstanding game today," Roeders said. "I'm as proud of this team as I have ever been - not only for what they did today, but for what they did the entire week."
Marquette returns to action on Friday, Sept. 27 at Valley Fields against Tulane at 7 p.m. That contest is the first C-USA match of the year for Marquette.
