Marquette is coming off a busy week in which it played three times in eight days. MU took on regionally ranked Wisconsin at home, winning 1-0 and then played in the Duke adidas Classic. In that tournament, Marquette played no. 1 North Carolina and led most of the way before losing. 4-1. the Golden Eagles also defeated Duke, ranked 11th by Soccer America, 2-1.
Scouting Tulane
Tulane is coming off a big weekend in which it got a 3-0 win over Louisville and a 1-1 draw with Cincinnati. After a shaky 2-4 start, the Green Wave has bounced back with its 1-0-1 conference start.
Tulane is balanced with six different players scoring the last six goals for the Green Wave. Lindsay Morris, a sophomore forward, is the Green Wave's leading returning goal scorer from a year ago. She tallied seven marks a year ago. In Tulane's last four matches, she has a goal. Tulane has been getting exceptional goalkeeping from Kristin Weegar. She stopped 11 shots against Cincinnati in 120 minutes and has made 25 saves in the last four matches.
Scouting Southern Miss
Southern Miss' fortunes have been opposite of Tulane's. The Golden Eagles started 4-2, but were 1-1 in their C-USA opening weekend. Southern Miss defeated DePaul, 1-0, but lost to Cincinnati, 2-0.
MU has owned Southern Miss offensively, outscoring USM 15-2 in the four outings. Goalkeeper Leslie Schoeplein will be tested. She made 11 saves against DePaul and has made 33 on the year.
Senior midfielder Katie Adams is the team's greatest offensive threat. She currently has six goals on the season.
In The Polls
Marquette women's soccer is ranked for the first time this season. The National Soccer Coaches Association of America has the Golden Eagles ranked 21st in its poll, released Monday, Sept. 23. MU is 24th in the Soccer Times poll and is receiving votes in the Soccer Buzz poll. The Golden Eagles were last ranked on October 15, 2001, when they were ranked 18th in the NSCAA poll. MU was ranked as high as 17th last season and was ranked for five weeks last season.
The Golden Eagles are currently ranked third in the Great Lakes Region poll by the NSCAA, moving up five spots. Marquette is sixth in the Soccer Buzz regional rankings.
Four MU opponents are in the top 25 this week. North Carolina continues to hold the nation's top spot. Duke fell to 22nd (NSCAA) and 20th (Soccer Buzz). Charlotte debuts at no. 17 in the NSCAA poll, while Dayton is in 24th in the Soccer Buzz table.
Gordon Rising in MU Career Categories
Senior Kate Gordon (Sioux City, Iowa) has her eye set on some MU career records. Currently, MU's second most prolific goal scorer needs 10 scores to tie all-time MU goal scoring leader Kelly Roethe. Roethe netted 49 goals from 1996-99. Gordon trails Roethe by 29 in the career points category. Roethe's total of 123 came on 49 goals and 25 assists. If Gordon were to tie Roethe for career goals at 49, she'd need 13 assists on the season to tie for points. Gordon is also five match-winning goals behind Roethe who won 17 matches.
Defensive Dalecky Becomes Offensive
In the Duke adidas Classic, senior defender Anne Dalecky (Wauwatosa, Wis.) joined Marquette's high powered offensive group by scoring points in both matches of the tournament. Dalecky scored on a penalty kick against North Carolina, picking up her second career goal. She also added an assist on a goal by senior forward Kate Gordon (Sioux City, Iowa) against Duke. In the tournament, Dalecky doubled her career offensive output from three to six points.
Shutout String Stopped
Marquette didn't allow a goal for four consecutive matches, the second longest streak in school history. MU shutout Ohio State, Dayton, Rhode Island and Wisconsin. The Golden Eagles did not allow a goal in 466 minutes, also the second longest string in school history.
Counting on the Masses
In Marquette's six victories, six different players have scored the match winning goal. Nine players in all have netted scores. Junior midfielder Anne Ioder (Franklin, Wis.) and senior forward Ashley Spakowitz (Hartland, Wis.) are the two most recent additions to the match-winning goal club. Both scored their first goal of the season in recent matches, beating Duke and Wisconsin, respectively.
Doomesday Defense
While Marquette has been successful on the offensive end this season, the defense has been equally deserving in Marquette's success. With a veteran back line led by seniors Anne Dalecky (Wauwatosa, Wis.), Diana Detrie (Green Bay, Wis.) and Ashley Koenig (Naperville, Ill.), Marquette has kept its opponents from getting off quality shots. MU has outshot its opponents 120-80 and holds a 58-39 shot on goal advantage this season.
Difficult Schedule
Head coach Markus Roeders has loaded his slate with challenging foes. On the schedule are six teams that advanced to the NCAA Tournament last year, including three which advanced as far as the third round. Currently, the nation's no. 1 ranked team, North Carolina, is on the Marquette schedule.
Roeders Wins 100th
Head coach Markus Roeders won two matches in the Dayton Marriot Flyer Classic to become the first women's soccer coach to win 100 games. He joined nine other MU coaches to reach 100 wins in any sport.
