Golfers Improve to Third At Blue Demon Invitational

WEST CHICAGO, Ill. -- Marquette improved from fourth place after the second round to finish in third place at the Blue Demon Invitational. All five Marquette golfers had a solid tournament, finishing in the top half of the individual standings.
Memphis moved from second to first to win the tournament with a 19-over 883. Marquette shot final round 298 to finish with a 44-over, 908. MU was tied for third with Eastern Illinois. DePaul, who was first after the first two rounds, slipped to second, four shots ahead of Marquette, with a 904.
Memphis golfer Alan Weant shot a tournament best 67 in the final round to take the tournament victory. He was sixth following the first two rounds. His three round total of 216 was par for the event. A second Memphis golfer, Allan Thomas, was one shot off the lead at 217.
Marquette freshman Kyle Murphy (Eau Claire, Wis.) paced all MU golfers and had the first top 10 finish of his collegiate career. Murphy fired par on the final 18 holes to finish at nine-over, 225. He was in a log jam of five golfers in eighth place.
Sophomore Jason Gaare (Elmuhurst, Ill.), MU's standard bearer after two rounds, finished in 14th place with a 12-over, 288. Sophomore Nathan Colson (Plymouth, Wis.) improved from 24th to 18th place with a final round 74. He shot 13-over 299 for the tournament. Senior Matt Hilton completed the tournament with a 230 (+14), finishing 21st. Freshman Steve Sass (Mequon, Wis.) rounded out the Marquette five with a 16-over, 232, finishing in 26th place.
Marquette continues its season on Sept. 30 and Oct. 1 with the 54-hole UofL Cardinal Intercollegiate in Louisville, Ky.
