MILWAUKEE - Marquette, ranked 21st in the nation by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, dominated play owning the bulk of the action, prevailing 1-0 over Tulane. The Golden Eagles (7-2, 1-0 C-USA) outshot Tulane (3-5-1, 1-1-1 C-USA) 23-2, and won the match on a second half goal from freshman Julie Thompson (Naperville, Ill.).
The lone goal came in the 76th minute when Thompson received a free ball 25 yards from the net. She fired into what was an empty right half of the goal for the score. The goal was created when senior forward Kate Gordon (Sioux City, Iowa) challenged Tulane goalkeeper Kristin Weeger. Weeger went to meet the loose ball that Gordon was charging for near the top of the penalty area and the ball squirted free to Thompson.
"I just saw the goalkeeper come out of her box and Kate Gordon was pressuring her," Thompson said. "The next thing I know the ball came to me and the goal was wide open."
Marquette had 11 shots in the first half and 12 in the second. MU put six shots on net. Weeger made five saves.
The Golden Eagles looked as if they would go up 1-0 early in the match. Gordon headed home a ball off a play originally started as a corner kick. However, it was ruled that Marquette was offside and the goal was waived off.
Marquette also had a significant goal scoring chance in the 89th minute. Gordon found her way clear in on the right side of the goal with a challenge from Weeger. She tried to center the ball toward the open half of the net, but Tulane defender Asia Simons cleared the Gordon pass.
"It's difficult when you dominate a game like this. It takes time to break down the other team," head coach Markus Roeders said. "We tried to do different things and we've got enough older players on this team to know that eventually, something will happen. Like this time, a ball comes out to a freshman with great field awareness and we got the goal."
The best defense for Marquette was its offense, as it controlled possession for most of the contest. The Golden Eagles didn't receive any significant chances from Tulane. The Green Wave got one shot on goal from forward Lindsay Morris but it was right at MU keeper Ashleigh Koenig (Naperville, Ill.) for her only save.
The Golden Eagles continue action on Sunday, Sept. 29 against Southern Miss at 1 p.m. at Valley Fields.
