LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Marquette Golden Eagles (7-6-1, 4-2-0 C-USA) picked up a late goal to edge Louisville 1-0 (6-5-2, 1-3-1 C-USA) Sunday afternoon at Cardinal Park in women's soccer action.
"We did a nice job today," head coach Markus Roeders said. "It was a big weekend for us, picking up road victories and helping us inthe conference race."
After a scoreless first half, the Golden Eagles had many chances in the second half. Sophomore Kristie Matola and sophomore Julie Thompson each hit the crossbar in the second half. The Golden Eagles did find the net Anne Ioder broke through in the 82nd minute on a feed from Ashley George. George led a pass through to Ioder who put the ball in the net from eight yards out. Ioder had her second scoring chance of the week. She recorded an assist in MU's win over Cincinnati on Friday.
"Anne is continuing to be the engine in the midfield that makes our offense go," Roeders said. "She continues to put herself and other players on the team in position to score.
Cardinal keeper Meredith Miller made three saves in the half, while her counterpart Katie Bissen stopped two Cardinal attempts. Bissen had four stops on the day, earning her second-straight shutout.
"Katie Bissen was solid all weekend for us," Roeders added. "She's been solid on our back line making key saves all weekend long."
The Golden Eagles had 17 shots, six of which were on goal. Louisville managed just four shots on goal.
The Golden Eagles return to action, playing at home, matching up with Charlotte on Friday, Oct. 17 at 7 p.m. at Valley Fields.
