MILWAUKEE - The Marquette women's basketball team will begin its 2003-04 season with its first practice on Saturday, Oct. 18 at 1 p.m. at the practice facility of the Al McGuire Center.
Head coach Terri Mitchell, in her eighth season as head coach, said she is excited for the upcoming season. The Golden Eagles are coming off a shorter off-season than usual. The team participated in a four-game exhibition tour of Italy last May.
"There's nothing like the first day of practice," Mitchell said. "We're really looking forward to this era of Marquette basketball. There's been a lot of anticipation since the end of the Italy trip to get to this point. This is what we live for. I can't wait."
The practice will also be the team's first at the new facility.
"It's amazing how a new environment can so positively affect your attitude," Mitchell said. "Everyone from the coaching staff to the players can't wait to get on the floor."
MU is riding a successful 2002-03 season. Last year's squad went 16-14 and advanced to the second round of the Women's National Invitation Tournament. Last year's squads also set school records and were nationally ranked in three-point accuracy and free throw shooting.
The season starts with an exhibition game on Sunday, Nov. 9 against Wisconsin AAU at the U.S. Cellular Arena. The regular season tips off on Saturday, Nov. 22 against Drake at 7 p.m. at the U.S. Cellular Arena. The team plays its first game at the Al McGuire Center on Sunday, Jan. 4 against Columbia at 2 p.m.
