MILWAUKEE - The Marquette women's soccer team won its fourth straight game, defeating East Carolina (6-5-5, 2-2-2 C-USA), 1-0, at Valley Fields. The win was the fourth consecutive for Marquette (9-6-1, 6-2-0 C-USA) , three of which were shutouts.
The Golden Eagles scored the lone goal of the match in the 31st minute when senior midfielder Anne Ioder connected for her second goal of the year. Senior forward Laura Culhane entered the ball to Ioder who beat East Carolina goalkeeper Lindsi Troxler from eight yards out. Ioder had four of Marquette's seven shots on the day.
"I've been able to step up and start scoring," Ioder said. "As a team, we're stepping up as well. I've been getting great crosses. This team realized that it has to start scoring goals if were going to win games."
The Marquette defense limited East Carolina to just one second half shot. The Pirates were able to get just two of their shots on goal, both of which junior keeper Katie Bissen saved.
"This wasn't the most aesthetically pleasing match, but I'm excited for the result," head coach Markus Roeders said. "The mark of a good team is getting the result when you don't play your best game. Some of that has to do with the way East Carolina played. They play a different style than we do and we had to adjust. But the most important thing is the result.:
With the win, Marquette moved into a tie for first place in Conference USA. The Golden Eagles have 12 points (based on two points for a win and one for a tie). TCU and Tulane also have 12 points.
Marquette returns to action on Friday, October 24 when it plays at DePaul at 2 p.m.
