CHICAGO - The Marquette women's soccer team, owning a share of first place and a four-match win streak, fell to DePaul in a key Conference USA contest at Wish Field in Chicago, 1-0. With the win, DePaul (11-5-1, 6-2-1 C-USA) takes over first place temporarily pending on the remaining league results. Marquette (9-7-1, 6-3-0 C-USA) continues to be in a tie with TCU, now for second place.
Marquette nearly opened up with the early lead. Senior defender Carolyn Klopp nearly put the Golden Eagles on the board when she hit the crossbar in the sixth minute just over the reach of DePaul keeper Lindsey Deason. Marquette had eight shots in the first half, three of which were on goal. The Blue Demons also got three shots on net in the first half, but MU keeper Katie Bissen and Deason were equal, netting three saves each.
As in the first half, both teams managed three shots on net, DePaul was the more fortunate team, finding the net in the 67th minute. On a corner kick at 66:17 Erin Davren's serve found Kelly DeBaene at the far post and she headed the ball past Katie Bissen for the match-winner. It was DeBane's third goal of the season.
"We gave up a goal on corner and it has happened to us before. As long as you allow yourself to be vulnerable in those situations, you can only blame yourself," head coach Maruks Roeders said. "We played well enough to win. I thought we were in good position to pull one out. But you have to move forward and try to get one back on Sunday."
The goal by DePaul was the first by the Blue Demons in the eight-match series. Coming into today, the Golden Eagles had outscored DePaul, 26-0 in the previous seven meetings.
Deason finished the match with five saves while Bissen was credited with six stops. The Blue Demons took six corner kicks and Marquette finished with three corners.
Marquette has one match remaining in Conference USA in an effort to advance in the standings. The Golden Eagles play Saint Louis on Sunday, October 26 at 1 p.m. at Valley Fields.
