Upcoming Matches
Oct. 31 vs. Northwestern, Valley Fields, 7 p.m.
The Marquette women's soccer team finishes its regular season with a matchup against Northwestern. The contest is scheduled for Friday, October 31 at 7 p.m. at Valley Fields. The match closes out the regular season careers for five Marquette seniors.
The Golden Eagles head into the match with a little scoreboard watching. Marquette is currently in a tie for first place in Conference USA. However, the highest seed the Golden Eagles can get for the C-USA Tournament is no. 2 due to the fact that UAB and USF meet and no matter the result, one will move ahead of MU in the standings. But if certain events play out, Marquette could still wind up with the no. 2 seed. Most of the league has a match remaining and five teams are within two points of Marquette in the standings.
Scouting Northwestern
Northwestern enters its match with Marquette at 7-8-1, but has a few quality wins to its credit. Northwestern won at no. 14 Purdue three matches ago.
The match concludes the season for the Wildcats, who enter the match at 7-8-1. The win against Purdue is the only win in the last seven for the Wildcats. Aileen Guiney is the leading scorer at three goals and four assists. Three other players have three goals. Whitney Jones has spent every second in goal for the Wildcats. She owns a 1.71 goals against average.
In The Polls
Marquette is still awaiting a return to the NSCAA regional rankings, but relieved votes in the Soccer Buzz regional rankings for the third straight week. Notre Dame tops the regional rankings in both polls, while North Carolina tops both polls.
Golden Eagles Round Out C-USA Season Win With Win
Marquette moved into a first place tie with UAB with its win over Saint Louis. Marquette and UAB both have 14 points. However, MU cannot claim first place as a result of future C-USA matches. Marquette's 14 points will be passed by either UAB or USF. With 14 points for UAB and 13 for USF, the winner will pass MU in points. With a tie, UAB would claim first place. The race is tight as DePaul has 13 points. TCU and Tulane each have 12 points with a match to go. Saint Louis, who plays DePaul, has 11 points, but cannot pass MU in the standings.
Marquette Learns to Come From Behind
The Golden Eagles have learned two valuable lessons in home C-USA action. Marquette came back from a 2-0 deficit to defeat Charlotte, 3-2. The Golden Eagles also trailed Saint Louis, 1-0, before quickly coming back to win, 2-1.
Golden Eagles Continue Shutout Trend
Marquette blanked East Carolina for its eighth shutout of the season. That total is sixth in school history. The Golden Eagles recorded 12 shutouts during the 1996 season.
Jensen Moves Up in Career Assists
With three assists on the year, senior midfielder Kristen Jensen (Shorewood, Ill.) has 18 total career assists. She started the year in seventh place with 16. She is currently tied for fourth. She needs three more to move into a tie for third place.
Bissen Named Player-of-the-Week for Second Time
Junior goalkeeper Katie Bissen (Maple Grove, Minn.) was named Conference USA Women's Soccer Defender-of-the-Week on Oct. 13. Bissen posted consecutive shutouts to lead the Golden Eagles to road wins at Cincinnati (2-0) and Louisville (1-0) in Conference USA play. This is the second time that Bissen has won the award this season. She was named C-USA Defensive Player-of-the-Week on September 8 after blanking USC and Oakland.
George Finds Scoring Touch
Freshman midfielder Ashley George (Greenfield, Wis.) got involved in the Marquette scoring attack. She scored her first career goal, the match winner, against Cincinnati and the following match, added an assist against Louisville.
McGill Gets on the Board
Freshman forward Beth McGill (Omaha, Neb.) became Marquette's go-to player in a three-match span. In four days, McGill recorded her first two collegiate goals. She scored the match-tying goal against Wis.-Milwaukee on Sept. 24 and scored the winner against Memphis on Sept. 28. She leads the team with three goals.
Solid on the Defense
A question mark heading into the year with so many newcomers, the Marquette defense has made its presence felt. Through four matches, Marquette allowed just one goal. This was the fewest goals allowed in program history this late in the year. Marquette allowed two goals through four matches in the 2000 season. Currently, MU is allowing 0.90 goals per match.
