MILWAUKEE - The Marquette women's soccer team scored eight minutes into the first overtime to finish the regular season with a 1-0 win over Northwestern. The Golden Eagles finish the regular season at 11-7-1. Northwestern is 7-9-1.
After an equal match for the first 98 minutes, Marquette claimed the only score on a driving right foot from freshman midfielder Lauren Weber. Sophomore midfielder Heather Goranson fed the ball from the right corner, sending it through traffic to the opportunistic Weber.
Marquette goalkeeper Katie Bissen had to be on her game tonight. She made seven stops on the night. Northwestern had 21 shots on the night compared to Marquette's 13. Northwestern missed a goal scoring opportunity in the 14th minute. Tabitha Lowey sent a ball into the net but was called offsides after Bissen moved ahead of her, putting her in the offsides position.
The match was the last regular season contest for Marquette's five seniors - Carolyn Klopp, Anne Ioder, Laura Culhane, Kristen Jensen and Lindsay Smale.
"It's hard to put into words what this class really meant to us. It's like a piece of art." head coach Markus Roeders said. "Those five were out there for a reason. It was a joyful moment because we won the game and in many ways, we won it for them."
Marquette awaits its seeding in the Conference USA Tournament, which is its next match. The Conference USA tournament is November 5-8 in Charlotte.
