Marquette Volleyball Knocks Off Southern Miss

NEW ORLEANS -In a highly competitive five-game match, sixth-seeded Marquette upsets No. 3 Southern Miss, 3-2 (30-28, 26-30, 19-30, 30-27, 15-13), in the quarterfinals of the Conference Volleyball Tournament on Saturday at Fogelman Arena. Marquette (14-15) advances to the semifinals for only the second time in C-USA history where the Golden Eagles will face second-seeded Louisville at 5 p.m. on Sunday. Southern Miss falls to 27-6 overall.
Marquette tied the match by winning match four and then claiming the final game, 15-13. Theresa Coughlin led the Marquette offense in the fifth game with fours kills to improve her total to a team-high 22. Ann Lopata followed with 16, while Erin Freer posted 13 kills. Freer also added a match-high 26 digs.
For Southern Miss, Andrea Bush finished with a match-high 26 kills, while Bridget Files recorded her 17th double-double of the season with 11 kills and a team-high 24 digs.
Marquette extends its winning streak to nine matches, the longest under the tenure of head coach Pati Rolf. The Golden Eagles are looking to avenge an earlier regular-season loss to the Cardinals when they meet on Sunday. It will also be a rematch of the 2001 C-USA Tournament semifinal game, where U of L defeated Marquette, 3-0.
