MILWAUKEE - The Marquette women's basketball program held two very successful events on Nov. 1-2 and turnouts were very high.
The coaches staged their fourth annual coaching clinic at the Marquette Gym on Saturday, November 1. High school coaches and small college coaches came from across Wisconsin and Illinois to take part in the session.
Attendees were treated to speakers Sue Guevara, former Michigan head coach, and Jennifer Azzi, Olympian and current player for the San Antonio SilverStars, before having a practice session which taught the ins and outs of the Marquette system. The practice was interactive as coaches were able to ask questions and review during portions of the MU women's basketball team's workout. The day's agenda ended with a tour of the Al McGuire Center.
"The success of this event is a testament to the growth of our program," head coach Terri Mitchell said. "We're very committed with wanting to share with area coaches. It's great to interact with the coaches, having the opportunity to share information."
The team also welcomed the public on Sunday, November 2, for its first Fan Fest. Several hundred Marquette fans packed the Marquette gym to cheer on the team, take pictures, be involved in contests and watch the team scrimmage for two 15 minute periods. Halftime contests and other games entertained the crowd during the event.
"For a first time event, we were pleased with the turnout," Mitchell said. "It was a great opportunity to mark the beginning of a new season. The fans were excited and it was a great atmosphere for this event."
The scrimmage offered fans the opportunity to see Marquette basketball in full force two teams playing an up tempo game.
"Even though it's early in the year, I'm pleased with how our offense played," Mitchell said. "Kelly Schwerman picked up where she left off, hitting big three pointers. Carolyn Kieger ran her team well. We showed that there's still a lot to work on, but there was definitely a good show for our fans."
The Marquette women's basketball team opens its exhibition season on Sunday, November 9 against the Wisconsin AAU select team at 2 p.m. at the U.S. Cellular Arena. The regular season gets underway on Saturday, November 22 against Drake at 2 p.m. at the U.S. Cellular Arena.
