Golden Eagles lose to DePaul, 2-1, in overtime
CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Erin Walter's fourth goal of the year proved to be the deciding score in DePaul's 2-1 double-overtime victory over Marquette in the opening game of the 2003 Conference USA Women's Soccer Tournament.
Walter's tally came in the 107th minute of play when she chipped to ball over the head of Golden Eagle goalkeeper Katie Bissen off an assist pass from Julianne Sitch. It's the Blue Demons' (13-6-1) first C-USA Tournament victory in three attempts. The 13 victories are a DePaul single-season record.
Sitch, the 2003 Conference USA Player of the Year, opened the scoring in the 16th minute after collecting an assist pass from Lauren Spacht and firing it into the back of the net.
"Give Marquette a lot of credit," Blue Demon head coach John Wilson said. "Anytime you have a rivalry, you throw every thing out the window. I'm extremely proud of my kids. It proves they have risen to the occasion."
Marquette evened the contest in the 82nd minute when Laura Culhane won control of the ball in front of the goal and knocked in a shot from point blank range.
"We fought extremely hard and created numerous chances," Marquette head coach Markus Roeders said. "The goal Laura scored was terrific and we had chances to score one more in regulation. It just didn't happen."
The Golden Eagles finish the season at 11-8-1 and await a possible invitation to the NCAA Tournament.
