MILWAUKEE ? Marquette won its exhibition opener, defeating Wisconsin AAU, 76-63. Kelly Schwerman led the way for Marquette, scoring 20 points. Anna DeForge was the top scorer for Wisconsin AAU, tossing in 27 points.
The Golden Eagles set the tone in the first half, scoring 47 points. Marquette was hot in the opening period, hitting 54.5 percent from the floor. Schwerman scored 17 points in the first half, hitting 5-of-7 from the floor. MU had a 17 point lead at the break, leading 47-30. MU led by as many as 19 in the second half. Marquette was bitten by its aggressive play to the tune of 26 fouls, 12 coming in the first half.
?I didn?t want our players to stop playing hard, right now,? head coach Terri Mitchell said. ?Right now, I?ll take the fouls for the aggressive play.?
Using a number of different players, Marquette?s hot pace slowed in the second half. MU still hit 40 percent as Wisconsin AAU cut the deficit to as few as nine. DeForge had 15 of her points in the second half.
?We went into the half with the intention of having the lead grow,? Mitchell added. ?The players on Wisconsin AAU all have college experience and they made a run on us. I got mad. I?ve got to get mad at times and when I do, our players have to not get nervous. That?s what exhibitions are for, to get through these things.?
Wisconsin AAU benefitted from eight points and 10 rebounds from Hall-of- Fame member Nancy Lieberman.
?It was great to play against someone like her,? Schwerman said. ?It will be something I?ll be able to talk about forever and she was able to show us a thing or to. She?s a great passer. It was an experience to watch her.?
Sarah Shouse added 12 points and six rebounds for Marquette. Danielle Kamm added 10 in her first collegiate appearance. MU was aggressive on the boards, outrebounding Wisconsin AAU 51-39.
The Golden Eagles conclude the exhibition season on Thursday, Nov. 13 against the Netherlands National Team at 7 p.m. at the U.S. Cellular Arena.
