Our Record Weekend

Over the Thanksgiving holiday, our team had the opportunity to play in a tournament in Maine. For many of us, this was our first trip to Maine. We left Thanksgiving day, in the evening, after we had a chance to stuff ourselves full of turkey and all the homemade fixings!
From the moment we stepped off the plane and were greeted by our host families, our team experienced what small-town life is like. We stayed at the ?Black Bear Inn?, ate three homemade Thanksgiving meals that included rolls as dense as a cantaloupe, and met half the town of Orono whose children or grandchildren do not even go to the University of Maine. The banquet on Friday night was quite a unique experience. Every team had the opportunity (ahem? requirement) to sing their school?s song, and I would have to say we were mighty talented! Thanks to MEM (who was the only one who knew the lines of our school?s song) and Father Patrick (who played the choir director), we were able to stumble our way through one stanza.
Our first game against Oakland started out a little rough, but our determination allowed us to finish the game with a strong win. This sense of confidence carried us through that game and through the championship game against Maine. We knew it would be challenging playing Maine, a very strong and successful program with a lot of fan support, but everyone ? from the coaches, to our few faithful fans, and every player on the team ? had faith that this was a tournament we could win. And we did!
After our championship game, we celebrated by eating at a lobster house not far outside of town. There were some of us who were brave enough to try the house lobster ? a buttery creature, solid red, with claws, antennas, and eyes still in tact, and enjoyed every bite of it.
Christina made the all-tournament team, Carolyn was the tournament MVP, and the freshman had the honor of carrying our trophy all the way home. It was a fun trip for everyone, but most importantly, we are now 4-0, the best start to any Marquette women?s team in history!
See you next week? we must go prepare for Iowa!
