Men's Basketball Tops Sacred Heart 77-72

The Marquette men?s basketball team defeated Sacred Heart tonight at Al McGuire Court at the Bradley Center, 77-72.
Travis Diener led all scorers with 22 points on 8-13 shooting for the Golden Eagles. Diener also recorded a team high six assists.
Early in the first half, the game saw eight lead changes and two ties. Marquette took the lead for good at the 8:48 mark of the first half on Todd Townsend?s lay-in. Marquette?s lead grew to eleven at the end of the first half as the Golden Eagles scored the most points in any half of the season with 49.
Marquette looked to its bench as Diener saw some second half foul trouble and the bench responded. Freshman Dameon Mason was efficient for Marquette, scoring ten points on 5-7 shooting in just 14 minutes. Terry Sanders grabbed a career high eight rebounds and also scored 12 points.
Sacred Heart stayed close in the second half, but Diener?s three-point field goal with 1:18 left in the game and as the shot clock was winding down, put the game away for good.
The Golden Eagles will begin defense of their Conference USA title on Wednesday, Jan. 7 at Houston. Action begins at 7:30 p.m.
