MILWAUKEE - The Marquette women's basketball team was defeated, 70-58 by Charlotte Sunday afternoon in the last home game of the season. The Golden Eagles enter into the final part of its schedule with a 13-10 overall, 5-6 C-USA record. Charlotte continues its hold on the league lead at 17-6 and is 9-1 in C-USA play.
Marquette freshman Carolyn Kieger, who scored a team-high 18 points and hit the 101 assist mark for the season, got Marquette going when she hit a three-pointer only 29 seconds into the game. After Charlotte's Monica League answered with a three-pointer of her own with 19:09 left in the first half, Rachel Klug made a lay-up giving the Golden Eagles a lead they enjoyed for the first 10 minutes of the half.
Marquette ended an almost four minute scoring drought with a Kieger lay-up at 8:31 in the first half. The Golden Eagles kept Charlotte from scoring in the remaining nine minutes of the half. Marquette took advantage of the 49ers struggling offense to score 12 points, ending the half with a 28-21 advantage.
"We felt pressured to win this game at the first half and at half-time they weren't thinking of the pressure to win," Charlotte coach Katie Meier said. "I think we were playing very hopeful in the first half, you have to play more determined."
The 49ers came out shooting in the second half as the Golden Eagles struggled to pull together on offense. Marquette didn't score in the second half until senior Katie O'Grady made a free-throw with 17:00.
Charlotte was on fire in the second half. It scored 49 points and hit 53.6 percent of its shots. League scored 15 of her game high 23 points in the second period.
The Golden Eagles had turnover trouble throughout the game, turing the ball over 23 times.
The 49ers began to take over the game, with the Golden Eagles coming within five points with five minutes to play, but failing to take the game over.
"Today was a tough loss," coach Terri Mitchell said. "I'm not at all displeased with our effort, we just turned the ball over too much and couldn't get our shots down in the second half."
Marquette goes on the road for its final three games of the season, beginning Friday, Feb. 21 at Louisville at 7 p.m. EST. Charlotte is on the road on Friday playing at South Florida at 7 p.m. EST.
