TAMPA, Fla. - Marquette's top golfers found the 72 holes at the Dick Wittcoff/USF Invitational difficult. Marquette finished 14th out of 15 teams and the top MU golfer was in 49th place.
Marquette shot a final round 329, the highest of any team in the tournament on any of the three rounds, to finish the 54 hole event at 111-over, 963. Jason Gaare was the team's highest finisher at 27-over, 240. He was the only Marquette golfer to shoot under 80 in the final round.
Even the leaders found the course and conditions difficult. Jacksonville State won the tournament at 50-over, 902. UCF was three shots behind. South Florida finished third, five strokes off the lead.
South Alabama's Gareth Maybin and Francis Marion's Fredrik Ohlsson tied for the lead after regulation, both shooting five-over, 218. Maybin claimed the medalist honors defeating Ohlsson in the playoff.
Freshman Kyle Murphy was second on the MU scorecard for the 54 holes. He shot a 241 (+28) to tie for 54th place. Sophomore Nathan Colson had two above 80 rounds for the first time in his career. He shot a 34-over, 247, to tie for 62nd. Senior Matt Hilton and freshman Steve Sass tied for 65th, shooting a 34-over, 247. Sass shot a 79 in the first round, but Hilton couldn't escape the 80s all weekend.
The Marquette golfers have a month to prepare for their next event. They play in the Kauai Collegiate Cup in Kauai, Hawaii, from on March 21-22.
