Fresh off its first win since the 2000 season, the Marquette men's golf team visits the Bradford Creek Intercollegiate with a renewed sense of energy and enthusiasm. The Golden Eagles waste little time after a win at the Kauai Collegiate Cup, taking part in an event just six days after returning from Hawaii with the win.
Tournament Format and Field
Three 18-hole rounds will complete the 2003 Bradford Creek Intercollegiate. The first and second rounds will be held back-to-back on Friday, March 28. The final round will be held on Saturday, March 29.
Joining Marquette in this year's 19-team Bradford Creek are: Army, Campbell, Charlotte, Coastal Carolina, Connecticut, Davidson, East Carolina, Elon, Furman, Gardner-Webb, UNC Greensboro, UNC Wilmington, Old Dominion, Seton Hall, Tennessee State, Virginia Commonwealth, Winthrop and Wofford. Teams will field five golfers with the four best scores of each round going toward the team score.
The Bradford Creek Golf Club
The Bradford Creek Golf Club features wide open, generous fairways and water coming into play on seven holes. The greens are large and undulating and nearly all are protected by green side bunkers, but the greens do allow run-up approach shots.
The course's signature hole is the 458-yard par four 12th. It features a dogleg left fairway that wraps around a pond and mounds on the right side of the fairway.
The 7,151-yard course is one of the longest that Marquette will play this season. Two holes after the 12th comes the longest hole on the course, the 583-yard par five 14th hole.
Last Time at the Bradford Creek Intercollegiate
Last season, Marquette struggled at this event, finishing last of the 25 teams. MU shot a 938 and was 82 strokes behind the champions, UNC Wilmington. Marquette's top finisher was Matt Hilton, who placed 28th with a five-over 228. Adam Gee of UNC Wilmington won the event with a five-under, 211.
This Season
MU is coming off its first tournament victory, winning the Kauai Collegiate Cup by four strokes. The win was the team's first since winning the Billiken Invitational in 2000. Marquette also has had three top five finishes as a team, finishing the fall with a third place at the Ironhorse Intercollegiate. MU also finished third at the Blue Demon Invitational and was fifth at the John Piper to begin the year.
Sophomore Nathan Colson picked up a win at the Ironhorse, his second career victory. Senior Matt Hilton leads the team in scoring at 75.05, with Colson a close second at 75.19.
The Lineup
Participating for MU are Matt Hilton, Nathan Colson, Kyle Murphy, Joe Weber and Steve Sass.
Murphy provides depth at the no. 3 spot. He scored 76.33 in the fall and led MU in scoring at the Blue Demon Invitational and the Kauai Cup. Weber showed promise, also leading MU in scoring at the Kauai Cup.
MU Signs Two in Fall
Head coach Tim Grogan has signed two players to national letters of intent for next season. Grogan has signed Mike Bielawski and Charlie Delsman to letters of intent. Bielawski, from West Allis Hale, was the Wisconsin Junior Player of the Year in 2002. Delsman, from Hartland Arrowhead, was the no. 1 qualifier for the U.S. junior amateur.
