MADISON, Ill. - The Marquette men's golf finished its regular season by moving up from sixth to eight place in the final round of the Billiken Invitational. The Golden Eagles shot a final-round 291, the best of the day, to move to third.
Southern Illinois won the event after moving up from fourth, finishing the tournament at a 31-over 883. UMKC, the second round leaders, placed second at 885. Marquette, nine shots off the pace after 36 holes, finished just four off the pace of Southern Illinois, shooting a 35-over 887.
Saint Louis' Evan Frederick held on to his one stroke lead after two rounds. He shot a two-over 215 to win the event.
Marquette had three golfers in a pack of eight in a tie for eighth place. Senior Matt Hilton (Muskego, Wis.), freshman Steve Sass (Mequon, Wis.) and sophomore Jason Gaare (Elmhurst, Ill.) all finished at eight-over 221. Gaare's scores did not count toward the Marquette totals as he was competing as an individual.
MU had two other golfers in the top 30. Sophomore Nathan Colson (Plymouth, Wis.) placed 26th with a 12-over, 225. Freshman Joe Weber (Bryant, Wis.) was 30th with a 13-over, 226. Freshman Kyle Murphy (Eau Claire, Wis.) finished the Marquette scoring with a 17-over, 230, that paced him in a tie for 40th.
The Golden Eagles finish their season with the Conference USA Tournament, scheduled for April 21-23 in Dade City, Fla.
