MADISON, Ill. - The Marquette men's golf holds a sixth place position after two rounds of the Billiken Invitational in Madison, Ill. The Golden Eagles are within striking distance of the lead as they trail first place by nine strokes.
UMKC holds the tournament lead at 17-under, 585. IUPUI and Lindenwood are a close second, three strokes behind. Just ahead of Marquette in a tie for fourth place are Eastern Illinois and Southern Illinois at 591 (+23). Marquette is at 5969 (+28).
MU senior Matt Hilton (Muskego, Wis.) is just off the pace in the individual event. Hilton is in a tie for fourth place at two-over, 144. Even Fredrick of Saint Louis leads the event at one-under, 141. A pair of golfers, Eastern Illinois' Dave Rella and Lindenwood's Matt Hopkins, are a stroke off the pace at even par, 142.
The Golden Eagles could be in better position thanks to the play of sophomore Jason Gaare (Elmhurst, Ill.). Gaare is in 10th place at four-over, 146, but he is competing as an individual and his totals do not count toward the team score.
Freshman Steve Sass (Mequon, Wis.) is having a strong tournament. He shot a two-round 148 (+6) and is in a tie for 19th place. Sophomore Nathan Colson (Plymouth, Wis.) is in 41st place with a 10-over 152. Freshman Joe Weber (Bryant, Wis.) is 51st place at 12-over, 154. Rounding out the pack for MU is freshman Kyle Murphy (Eau Claire, Wis.) who is in 67th place at 15-over, 157.
Final round play begins at 8 a.m. on April 15.
