Milwaukee-It came down to the No. 6 singles match today at the Conference USA Championships to decide who would share the fifth place spot with East Carolina. Kristin Nobel held on in the three-set match to defeat Alexandra Stankovic, 6-2, 5-7, 6-2, to secure the win for fourth-seeded Memphis (16-7). Marquette, who had the 10th-seed, ends the season 5-18.
The Tigers got the early lead by capturing the doubles point with the duo of Sabrina Lindemann and Monica Gonzalez-Gordo defeating the Marquette tandem of Gen Charron and Veronica Garcia Briseno, 8-2, at the top doubles spot. Memphis's No. 3 doubles team of Sumitra Rao and Noble posted an 8-5 victory over Stankovic and Michelle Mojzis.
Mojzis started out singles play with a No. 1 win over Lindemann in straight sets, 6-4, 7-6, to end her season at 6-14.
Garcia Briseno's No. 4 victory over Viktoria Gruber, 6-7, 6-1, 6-3, gave her the top spot on the team in wins with her 24-12 season record.
Charron's win in the No. 5 spot, 6-3, 6-4, over Andrea Feichtinger, left it up to Stankovic to determine the match outcome after Eva Trujillo Herrera and Annabelle Espinosa suffered losses at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots. Charron ends the season, 6-9, while Trujillo Herrera owns a 10-18 record and Espinosa posts a 3-15 record.
Top-seeded Tulane captured the overall title for the second year.
