MILWAUKEE -- Eight matches against teams that competed in the 2002 NCAA Tournament are among the highlights of the 2003 Marquette Volleyball schedule. In addition, the Golden Eagles of second-year Head Coach Pati Rolf will play a total of 10 home matches.
Marquette opens the campaign with an appearance in the talent-laden Duke Invitational the weekend of August 29-30. Joining MU in the field are 2002 NCAA Tournament squads Texas A&M (21-10) Duke (24-10) as well as Pittsburgh, a team that is expected to be strong after posting a 20-9 won-lost ledger last year.
Following its trip to Duke, Marquette will play at a tournament hosted by defending Big Ten champion Minnesota the weekend of September 5-6. Along with the Golden Gophers, ranked No. 11 in the nation and the winners of 32 matches a year ago, Marquette will meet up with Kansas (19-10) and Dayton (22-9).
The Golden Eagles make their home debut the weekend of Sept. 12-13 when they host the Marquette Challenge. Comprising this year's competitive field are Missouri, who finished 26-8 last season while earning a spot in the national tournament, Bradley University (19-12) and Ohio University whose 25-9 mark in 2002 established a school seasonal record for wins.
Marquette will play its final regular-season tournament the weekend of Sept. 19-20 when it ventures to Montana State (21-12) to play in a tournament that features Wyoming (20-11) and Gonzaga.
After playing at UW-Milwaukee, another 2002 NCAA Tournament team, on Sept. 24, Marquette jumps into Conference USA play the weekend of Oct. 3-4 with road matches against NCAA Tourney teams Cincinnati (23-9) and Louisville (28-6). After playing 12 of its first 15 matches on the road, Marquette will welcome the weekend of Oct. 10-11 when it plays home matches against league foes Charlotte and East Carolina. A highlight of the home portion of the conference schedule takes place on Friday, Nov. 7, when defending C-USA tournament champion and NCAA participant South Florida comes to town for a 7:00 p.m. contest.
This year's Conference USA Championship will be held Nov. 21-14 in New Orleans.
