MILWAUKEE - Marquette had several opportunities and played a strong defensive match, but it was an unintentional handball in the box in the 85th minute that cost the Golden Eagles a shot at victory in the Milwaukee Cup. Dayton (2-0) wins the Cup with a 1-0 win over Marquette. The Golden Eagles (1-1) take second place with its win over Vanderbilt on Friday night.
The Flyers scored the lone goal when Shannon Kuhl blasted a penalty kick to the upper left corner past Marquette goalkeeper Katie Bissen. Bissen played a solid tournament, not allowing a goal in regular action in the two matches. However, she was unable to reach the well-placed strike by Kuhl. The PK opportunity was created when a cross hit MU defender Sarah Uyenishi in the left elbow, costing MU the free attempt.
"Our team is looking at this as a disappointment," head coach Markus Roeders said. "To lose on a PK is unfortunate. The team is disappointed because they were not rewarded for their great effort, especially giving up a PK on a handball."
Marquette had several second half opportunities to create scoring chances before the Dayton strike. In the 62nd minute, midfielder Heather Goranson put a header on net from 10 yards out. She crossed the attempt to the far right side after midfielder Laura Culhane entered a cross. Goranson's shot was saved by Dayton keeper Sarah West.
MU had another opportunity in the 70th minute. Forward Beth McGill had a point-blank shot from six yards out that West moved to her left to save. West made five saves in the second half for the Flyers.
The Marquette defense limited Dayton to just four shots on goal, while creating six of its own. Bissen made three saves for Marquette.
"We played well against two great college teams this weekend," Roeders added. "Our defense was able to get composure and come together as a unit. Offensively, we were able to get a number of chances. We just have to take the positive and learn from the negative going into a good tournament next weekend."
Bissen, senior forward Carolyn Klopp and senior defender Lindsay Smale were named to the all-tournament team.
The Golden Eagles return to action on Friday, Sept. 5, when they take on nationally-ranked Southern California at 2 p.m. (EDT) in the Nike Michigan Invitational in Ann Arbor, Mich.
