MILWAUKEE -- The Marquette women's soccer team was selected to finish third of 14 teams in Conference USA by the league's coaches, the league office announced.
The Golden Eagles will be seeking their fifth consecutive NCAA Tournament bid and their first regular-season and tournaments crowns since 2000. While Marquette has not claimed a share of the league regular-season or tournament title in the last two years, its success hasn't been unfounded. Marquette has finished first or second at the league's postseason tournament each of the last seven seasons.
Preseason All-Conference selections Kristen Jensen (Shorewood, Ill.) and Anne Ioder (Franklin, Wis.) return from last year's team which finished 13-8-3. Ioder, a senior, was a starter in all 24 matches last year, scoring two goals and two assists. Jensen, also a senior, has been MU's starting central midfielder for the last three seasons. She scored five points a year ago on a goal and three assists.
Cincinnati, the tournament champion each of the last two seasons was picked to win the league's title. Charlotte, last year's regular season champion, was picked one spot ahead of MU.
Marquette begins its season at Valley Fields on Friday, Aug. 29 at 8:15 p.m. against Vanderbilt as part of the 2003 Milwaukee Cup. MU plays an exhibition contest on Friday, Aug. 22 against Illinois at Valley Fields at 5 p.m.
