BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - While Oakland holds a stronghold on the lead at the John Piper Intercollegiate, Marquette has a firm grasp on sixth place in the 12 team field. The Golden Eagles shot a 25-over, 601 for the first 36 holes. Oakland has a 15 shot lead at two-under, 574, over Ohio. Marquette trails fifth place Detroit by seven strokes, but leads a pack of three in seventh place by 13 shots.
MU was fifth after the first round, shooting a 299. Junior Nathan Colson was in the hunt after shooting a 71 for the opening 18. He was tied for second after the first round, but lost his positioning with a second-round 79. He is in 22nd place at six-over, 150.
Sophomore Steve Sass leads Marquette with a pair of consistent rounds. He shot a 75 and 73 to earn a tie for 13th place at four-over, 148. He is six strokes off the lead held by Oakland's Brian Stuard and Colin Christie.
Sophomore Joe Weber is tied for 22nd with Colson. He shot rounds of 76 and 74. Freshman Michael Bielawski is in the upper half in is first collegiate tournament. The MU newcomer shot rounds of 77 and 76 to sit in 30th place. He is at nine-over, 153.
Sophomore Kyle Murphy is the final Marquette golfer. He is in 48th place after shooting a 15-over, 159.
Final round play is Tuesday, Sept. 16 at 9 a.m. at the Stone Ridge Golf Club in Bowling Green, Ohio.
